Roberto Martinez discussion

the Martinez stamp is on the team by the end of next season.

Wigan suffered the Martinez stamp and look what happened to them in 3 seasons. Have you ever thought why he felt he was not the man to manage Wigan in the championship.

I might also add that he was flirting with our neighbours for the job there before they settled on Rogers, wonder why they preferred him?

Daves now agreeing with Steve freaking Wigan.

Think, its written in the bible if Davek and Steve Wigan agree on something will open the doors of the stable and unleash the four horsemen of the apocalypse

Oh right so now it's a long term project that had at its core a second season of stinking the place out. I'll sleep easier tonight knowing that it's all part of the bigger picture.

I'm delighted to know that after one bad season we'll be achieving our aim of a top four finish next year.

In the Championship that is, but still, mission accomplished!

I don't think that's accurate mate. Every team has their definition of success. For us it has been top 5/6/7 finishes. qualifying for Europe etc. Every team and even the most pragmatic of supporters, would regard those relative successes as stepping stones towards a greater goal.
Martinez talks of the experience of playing in Europe this year as if it is preparation for the future.
The term project/plan is used; but a project has to have a clear aim and defined end. What does that 'end' mean for us - good passing play? ok so what will that in turn deliver? Good passing play for the sake of it or results and subsequent success?

I'm not disagreeing with your notion that a long term plan exists, but I do question your apparent assertion that success should be dismissed at this juncture. Success is required to deliver the plan - in that staying up this year would be a 'success' if you baseline as from our situation following the Hull game. Staying up is a key 'success' milestone in delivering the long term plan.
Our success/defined end/aim is and has been for some time Premier League survival. The high end finishes have gilded it a bit, but the club is not equipped for anything grander than that - for reasons that are obvious and financial (look at the year we qualified for the CL: there was no reasonable effort to buy in the type of talent that could have took advantage of that opportunity; and look at the way in 2009 we'd achieved a very good PL position plus a cup final appearance - it was met not with more expectancy of taking the next step because that would have cost money, rather it was met with cuts).

In that context the plan on Moyes' departure was to retain PL stability plus give a new twist of a change in the style of play that would not only achieve stability but give the organisation a new identity. Martinez's appointment has to be seen in that light, and, similarly (as Steve says above) any possible threat to his status as manager has to be seen through that prism too. In short: getting shut of Martinez would not only entail a loss of finances in terms of compo, it'd mean an organisation having to go through the Herculean task of creating a new vision of its future identity again. I dont think there's remotely the will to do that unless it is a completely dire situation in the coming couple of months.

Dave from the 2008/09 season to the 2012/13 season Premier league survival was not in question and that was not for Everton in those season the definition of success. In those seasons our final position was 5,8,7,7,6. a pretty decent performance.

This thread's an education.

As despite us having an average league finish of 6th over the last 8 years, I'm now informed that in fact our aim every season has been premier league survival. I'm sure Bill had exactly that thought as he signed the paperwork for the £28m arrival of Lukaku.

Bobby deserves a medal if he keeps us up, what an achievement, bravo

Yes, and what is that other than a gilded case of surviving in the PL...it's not success is it?! It's nothing. That's why we all laughed at stuff like the 7th place trophy etc.

*sigh*

You really excuse yourself from this debate now, it's obviously beyond you.
