Roberto Martinez discussion

Bloody pressed post reply before I'd finished!! It's there now!

Now, now, calm down. Watch the blood pressure! For me to reply you must have posted the comment before finishing.

However you have made valid points, methinks age is now catching up on many of our players. RM should be turning more to our young players and building for the future. If he is capable of that!

Martinez is obviously making a few mistakes at the minute.

But I'm just going to throw this out there for discussion.

Do we over rate our players? Maybe they're not as good as we think they are/should be?

We've seen them be good. But all players have off times. And some don't get good again.

Not sure I think that but worth a discussion.

Hard to opinion that if they're in the wrong positions... lol

Think we've got a mixture of players that have peaked ( Barry , Distin, Players that haven't kicked on from last season , Players being played in a unsuitable system and players playing when not fit.

It's ironic really. Both ex-Swansea managers, in charge of the Merseyside clubs, both having pretty poor seasons so far.

My take on Martinez - he's a talented, young manager. But for me he strikes me as someone who should be in charge of a small Spanish club like Alaves, not Everton who are looking to break into the Champions League places.

He doesn't seem to have a 'Plan B'. Now, this accusation is thrown around a lot by armchair 'know-it-all' supporters these days but in this case it's definitely true. His teams are easy on the eye but let's remember that he took Wigan down into the Championship because he insisted on tippy tappy and never had an alternative tactic.

The real acid test for RM is when Distin and Jagielka retire/move onto new clubs (don't they have like a combined age of 70?!) and he has to build his own defence - something that, like the big nosed twonk in charge of your red neighbours, has always struggled with.

Is it true that yesterday, he didn't make ONE substitution? If so, that's ridiculous in a game where the opponents are in dire form and have half their squad missing.

Martinez had the luxury of spending £25 million + in the summer yet Everton currently look worse than I've seen them in a very long time.

Would I sack RM if I was in charge? No, last season gives him enough credit in the bank to see him through until May 2015 at least, and again, exactly the same situation applies to the ol Fish Face across Stanley Park.

But it will be very interesting to see how he handles the next summer transfer window IF Kenwright allows him that time and funding. Because there's one thing for sure - Everton desperately need a new defence, just as we (Man Utd) do.

If I was a gambling man, I don't think RM will be at Everton the season after next. He doesn't strike me as someone who should be in charge of a club flirting with the notion of CL footy.

I don't think we over rate our players, but there are several issues contributing to our poor performances. The likes of Pienaar are getting on now, not as mobile and more injury prone. This has an impact on Baines' effectiveness as he and Pienaar always had such a good understanding. On the opposite side we play many games now with no natural wide man on our right. Yesterday was a joke, with no wide man on either side. This means that Coleman has no-one in front of him to either inter-change passes with or to draw defenders away to allow Coleman a run down the wing. Last season (or post-January when McGeady arrived) we had more options in wide positions. Deulefeu was inconsistent but he was a handful for defenders and created space for others to make forward runs. Atsu has not worked out at all, Mirallas is as injury prone as ever and McGeady blows hot and cold.

In defence both of our first choice centre backs are having difficult seasons. Distin is beyond his sell by date and I don't think Jagielka has recovered from the battering he got from the media during the World Cup. He is also having to cover for Distin a lot more. Added to this, neither of them are exactly comfortable with the Martinez possession based game and the opposition have sussed this so pressure us more. Having Stones injured has been a major blow in this as it leaves us short of viable options.

In midfield Barry seems to have lost something from last season - maybe just an extra year in the legs. The loss of McCarthy to injury for so many matches has been a huge blow. He's the one who makes us tick and without him we just seem to meander through games. Having him back will improve things immensely.

Already has a replacement for Distin in the form of Stones. Jags has another 4 years left in him. Galloway and Browning are also top prospects so I don't think he has any issues when it comes to sorting out defenders.

Your correct, he didn't make any substitutions yesterday which is criminal tbh. If that was at Goodison I would pretty much put my mortgage on it that if he tried such a stunt it would be the last game he had in charge, or at the very least he would have a headache for a month from all the boos.

All that it pains me to say it, he took his eye off the ball in the summer, piss poor preparation, players not physically ready for the season, some players not mentally ready and still aren't ( Howard and Distin being 2 culprits who have been nothing short but embarrassing ), injuries, out of form players then for some reason Martinez has been making awful tactical selections.

Should he be sacked? No chance and if anyone thinks he should need to go and give there head a wobble. But he's not beyond criticism and deserves it because he's been piss poor this season and his only saving grace is the EL. If we carry on like this through the 2nd half of the season then I can't see him being here for the start of pre season so I think the pressure is seriously on him and I think it was showing even as early as when we played you at OT this season.

Was the first time any manager all season hasn't made a sub in the Prem, was very odd.
Strange one that, you could see Kone was already to come on then they got the 3rd.

Maybe he thought lets not risk it we're already beat.

He should made changes around the 55-60 mark, you could see then we were never getting back into it

Agree with most of that except the bit about him not being here next season if it carries on, Kenwright is proven to back his managers in tough times and unless we somehow end up relegated he won't panic and get rid of Martinez (and there's no way we will be relegated or even close).

Yep,totally bizarre,we were creating zero,McGeady is an "in and out" player but he has the potential to turn a game,Kone has done well on his return,20/25 minutes for him?to be fair apart from Besic and Barkley you could have hooked any of them.

I don't think we will be anywhere near relegated mate. My hunch is more to do with a couple of things

1. I don't think the board will be such a soft touch with him and will point to the likes of 28m cheques being made as a sure sign that they expected better. He's the first Everton manager in a long long long time to have money so there is a lot of pressure to bring success die to that.

2. If we continue to play this sideways and backwards football, slow with no end product, the locals just ain't going to have it and he will find out in no uncertain terms that it isn't acceptable. It already started against qpr. In fact it's always been there lurking in the background but when your winning everything is rosy in the garden.
