It's ironic really. Both ex-Swansea managers, in charge of the Merseyside clubs, both having pretty poor seasons so far.
My take on Martinez - he's a talented, young manager. But for me he strikes me as someone who should be in charge of a small Spanish club like Alaves, not Everton who are looking to break into the Champions League places.
He doesn't seem to have a 'Plan B'. Now, this accusation is thrown around a lot by armchair 'know-it-all' supporters these days but in this case it's definitely true. His teams are easy on the eye but let's remember that he took Wigan down into the Championship because he insisted on tippy tappy and never had an alternative tactic.
The real acid test for RM is when Distin and Jagielka retire/move onto new clubs (don't they have like a combined age of 70?!) and he has to build his own defence - something that, like the big nosed twonk in charge of your red neighbours, has always struggled with.
Is it true that yesterday, he didn't make ONE substitution? If so, that's ridiculous in a game where the opponents are in dire form and have half their squad missing.
Martinez had the luxury of spending £25 million + in the summer yet Everton currently look worse than I've seen them in a very long time.
Would I sack RM if I was in charge? No, last season gives him enough credit in the bank to see him through until May 2015 at least, and again, exactly the same situation applies to the ol Fish Face across Stanley Park.
But it will be very interesting to see how he handles the next summer transfer window IF Kenwright allows him that time and funding. Because there's one thing for sure - Everton desperately need a new defence, just as we (Man Utd) do.
If I was a gambling man, I don't think RM will be at Everton the season after next. He doesn't strike me as someone who should be in charge of a club flirting with the notion of CL footy.
