Roberto Martinez discussion

You left out the GK spot in all that. United could go out and spend a fortune on a GK and if they didn't work out tear up his contract and get the next world class phenomenon in. They had world class GKs they were prepared to pay for. That was the rock they were built on. We have limited funds. If Martinez had the same resources we wouldn't be looking at Robles as our saviour from a GK quite obviously two or three seasons past barely adequate. Put Van der Sar in this team or De Gea or Schmiechel and we'd be troubling the CL spots.

Has it occurred to you that we've just spent £13.5m on a striker which is only £3.5m less than De Gea cost, so to say we don't have money to spend on a proper keeper is a truly bizarre excuse to make?

The only way of bettering the managerial situation for sure (rather than taking another punt) is to get a world class manager in. And they are not in our orbit I'm afraid.
Every managerial appointment is a punt though, it's just degrees of risk. If you're of the opinion that Martinez isn't good enough (I know that's not your opinion) then you can't just accept that you have to try and improve.

That and when we still currently have two experienced keepers on the books (even if one is Howard), buying another would be questionable.

If Howard leaves in the summer as many suspect, then I'm sure Martinez will bring in another keeper. Will he buy a first choice or reserve?

Well that's still to be seen, however I don't think it is unrealistic to expect that we could spend £10m+ on a keeper if it is required.

Lloris cost Spurs £8m, the same as one Steven sodding Naismith cost Norwich. The "keepers are too expensive" argument holds absolutely no water

World class keepers one after another with the ability to get rid straight away. Everton dont have that freedom to act.

We can get a good one for under £10M and that's what will happen in the summer.

I agree. Financing a move for a keeper isn't beyond our means at all, the issue on hand is finding a talented keeper who is available.

They're valuable assets and for that reason clubs are often unwilling to part with them.

It's largely down to him this goals conceded record.

I'd give you a waggle of the hand on that, but I think there maybe a bit more to our overall defensive frailty than Timmbo being a bit or even a lot past it.

You think your man will come good - I don't, but a cup win will do neither of us any harm...happy days eh.

No we obviously can't attract a ready made world class keeper. But a very good goalkeeper is available out there for £10m tops, probably less. The situation should have been addressed last summer, and we would absolutely be performing better this season, there's no ifs, buts or maybes about it

Well that is a dilemma for people who dont see progress here, not me. If they see change as bringing an improvement in league position to the point of CL spots (surely the only reason for getting rid?) without getting funding to secure those ambitions I'll tell them this: you are taking an almighty gamble with this club's future.

Let's take Sirigu for example, he's available because PSG have a new number 1 in Kevin Trapp. I'd be shocked if Sirigu were to cost us more than about £5m, being second choice. A very good goalkeeper for £5m? Yeah, go on then
