Roberto Martinez discussion

There is no failure. No one sensible can look at the football we've been playing throughout this season and the deepening and advance of a squad of players and call it failure. And, btw, no one can call the PL position failure - even if it stays where it is. You fail in this league when you're in a relegation dog fight, unless you're one of the financially doped clubs, that is.

I went to bed and you were fighting your corner, I get up and your still fighting your corner. I don't always agree with some of the guff that you come out with, but you are a star mate, keep up the good work ;)

Wish the match goers would get it through their heads that it is counterproductive to create a negative environment. It only increases the opponent's confidence and decreases ours.

Thankfully the away support has been ace.

The away support consists of people who make up the home support.

They are not a different species........these days the travelling fans are almost entirely season ticket holders.

Many of those who booed the Kone substitution last week will be singing their hearts out at Bournemouth this afternoon.

There is a different mindset when a fan is at an away game......at home he or she demands the team go forward aggressively whereas on the road a backs to the wall fighting performance is roundly applauded.

But do not be thinking the travelling fans will not make their feelings known if they do not like what they see on an alien field.

Those of us who were at Bolton a few years ago will testify to that ;)

I agree. It is going round and round in circles. We'll be here next season with this thread or one like it too.

I think it's a toxic "debate" now for the forum itself. It poisons the water.

FWIW: if I were admin I'd open this thread for 48 hours after the end of each game for discussion and then lock it for the rest of the time.
Can you imagine if we loose today what is going to Be like on this thread.

I reckon we should sack him and get the best manager in the world and sign the best players in the world and win the champions league.

1 like = 1 agree

You telling me that when we appointed brown shoes there were not other managers on the next level but not top shelf.

Think bigger and better, the money is there now to attract better manager appointments.

Failure measured in terms of fans expectations. I understand that some fans will be locked into a coach or player which will be outside of the general herd but most will view it as a failure in basic terms.

The board will play along till they are in embarrassed into doing something but there expectations will be different both in public and private.

Worst points total that season for 44 years. Relegation might not have been an issue in the end but it was a sackable offence to finish with 39 points. He was very very lucky to remain in his position.

Not if you look at the circumstances of that season. Zero financial backing for the manager and a fire sale at the end of the season to stave off the creditors.

The players downed tools when they were safe with 5 games to go when we were on for a solid mid table finish. The only one who was bothered about getting more points was the manager. After Moyes cancelled a "fun day" for the players after they lost to Wolves they threw the last few games.

Read match reports from the fan sites from that season. Moyes was still backed, it was the players who were getting the stick.

I've said for a while we've got everything in place to be an outrageous counter attacking side. But, play long, short, possession, counter and do it all in the one game. We'd be a dangerous unpredictable beast.

Nah mate, no can do, it has to fit into the pass pass possession philosophy. You can do one or the other. This is the whole Martinez Dichotomy, he has a serious dose of doublethink going on... and maybe doesn't even know it.

This play better away / hit em on the break stuff is cup form...so long as you get drawn away

I'd like to see RM stay on until at least the end of next season, if there's no significant sign of improvement by then I think he's had enough time and money to address any current issues with the squad.

I think RM needs to stop talking rubbish in press conferences, admit when we play badly and show that he's aware of and determined to address any issues as they arise. People respect honesty and being overly positive no matter the result erks a lot of fans, which is understandable.

I think the crowd at home games need to support the team instead of acting like spoilt kids whose parents refused to buy them sweets, we're not loaded, we don't have a right to win every game we play, as long as the team are giving their all and working hard we should try our hardest to support them.

It's obvious RM still has to prove he's got what it takes to make us solid defensively while keeping the goals from drying up and although I do think some of the goals have been due to bad tactics many seem to have just been due to individual defensive\goalkeeper errors. Many of our most talented players are really young, they're going to make mistakes, be inconsistent, lack discipline etc due to their age. That's why we need to be patient, just because some of them are worth loads 'on paper' due to their potential doesn't mean they currently play as if they're experienced players in that price bracket.

RM is having to field players with a lot of potential in the hope they can develop and grow as a team as we don't have enough money to just buy a team straight off. He's trying to play the long game while most fans, especially on the forum only care about the next result and don't have much regard for the bigger picture. Wether RM has the talent and ability to bring his long term plan to fruition is debatable as he's constantly trying to improve players before having his hand forced by a rich club coming in for a player.

I don't know for sure wether he can or will bring the success he wants, just like none of the fans who want rid do. I know that the league is really competitive currently and with the new TV deal it'll stay that way. It's all about fine margins, we only need a fairly small improvement in performances and we'll shoot up the league and the one thing I am sure of is that RM has put together a young team, with more potential to improve over the next couple of years than 90% of teams in the league. That's why I'm patient with him. It's not because I'm blind to his faults, his press conferences, etc I just try to look at the bigger picture and I think his plan can work if he can get the balance between attack\defense or just bring in a better goalkeeper, more experienced cb to help.

Haha are you sure you're not Roberto. There is no failure. Great joke

Yes, I agree the devil is always in the detail of a season. Perhaps that's a conclusion that might be reached more generally.

What we must remember is Martinez is still a manager learning and his pre-season wasn't properly planned in conjunction with the World Cup, I'd say he has learned from that and going forward we will be more suitably prepared for the season. If we qualify for Europe I think we would be in a better position squad size wise

Still learning...after 8 or 9 years...yes I know you never stop learning...Hmmm.
