If you want to go down the statistics route then here are 7 players with an average age of 21.86.
LB - Galloway 19
LCB - Mori 24
RCB - Stones 21
CM - McCarthy 25
RW -Deulofeu 21
AM - Barkley 21
CF - Lukaku 22
Coleman (27) also came into the professional game late and Cleverley is also just 26 years old...
Adding them both would take us to an average age on 9 players of 22.88.
Really if you look at the first eleven then there is a gulf in age between the group above and then:
Howard - 36
Jagielka - 33
Baines - 31 next week
Kone - 32
Barry - 35 in feb
This is where if we add in Barry and Howard the average age of this 11 is 25 years old.
For me, without an agenda i think we need to objectively look at this:
7 players average age = 21.86
9 players average age = 22.88
Adding in the older players skews the numbers by several years and its detracts from the fact our core group is massively inexperienced and if players are meant to hit their peak at 27-30 years old we are 5 or 6 years away from that for the main group.
Additionally, our squad isnt that strong behind the players listed...
So we basically have a very young team who are somehow expected to reach the top 4. I think this is unrealistic.
Perversely i think in 2 seasons time when Howard, Barry and a few others have been replaced with top quality into the core group i think despite the age group still being under 25 at that time we will have more of a chance of top 4.
Because this core group will have 2 seasons more experience and the quality of players brought into the squad should improve as well not to mention these young players will organically be improving every season.
I think these are the kind of numbers we should be looking at as well as spend on wages when looking at league position. Clearly the average age has come down enormously since Martinez took over.
