Roberto Martinez discussion

Ok I hold my hands up but we were an extremely precarious position at that point last season and I felt a change would do us good. We survived and now we've got the chance to reassess and bring in a far higher quality manager.

Like who mate? I'm not taking the mick either.

Who could we realistically get, who is better than our current manager?

I've just said AVB would be my pick!

But you said AVB was a mercenary failure?

Any replacement for Martinez must have operated at the very highest level before. None of this Moyes/Martinez punching above their weight bs. It's the reason the kopites got rid of Brenda and brought in Kilppety. For that reason AVB stands out as the man who has managed at the very highest levels at home and abroad. He also is unlikely to stand for any of the defensive atrocities that have been perpetrated recently by the Catalan.
There is no replacement...there will be NO replacement. Martinez is running the whole organisation now. He's not just the manager, he's the public face of the football club on and off the pitch. Who else is there, now that Kenwright is in absentia? He is Everton.

For those reasons, Martinez's position has never been stronger. Not only that, right now we're playing some of the best attacking football in the country, scoring shed loads of goals, 4 points off 5th (7 points off a CL spot), in the QFs of a cup (hopefully SFs by the end of the day) and he's ensured we have 4/5 of potentially the best players in the world in a couple of years in our team.

The feller's fireproof.

Enjoy this type of football and football education whilst you can; when Everton do eventually replace Martinez in 3-5 years time, you're likely to get the Tony Pulis/Sam Alardyce of the day rather than the AVB of the day.

I'm not saying he's without faults but which manager is? He failed at Chelsea and to a lesser extent at spurs due to circumstances beyond his control. Ok so he followed the money to Russia but at least he succeeded there. I'd probably even accept Benitez if he was available due to the fact he has at least got some kind of pedigree.

You called him a failure and a mercenary, you can't suddenly backtrack to suit your argument mate. Throwing Benitez name out there is fairly embarrassing, the less said about that the better really.

You're flapping like a punch drunk boxer and if your corner had any sense the towel would have been launched into the ring some time ago.

I respect your opinions in general davek in particular your views towards the board but to try and justify Martinez position at the club due to their lack of ambition/strategy is not on mate.

I dont need to justify Martinez's position right now. Last season, yes. Now? No chance. Everything isn't rosy in the garden, but it defo doesn't smell like dung either.

We go with Roberto until he's taken us as far as he can. Personally I think he'll get us a cup or into the CL well before he leaves us.

I'm fairly satisfied thus far. We had a tough draw of fixtures and have played and scored some decent goals.
In truth, we are around where I thought we'd be but expect us much higher by New Year with some winnable games between now and then.

winnable games eh...

Q) Would Bournemouth have been one of those 'winnable games' ?

A) On Friday or even at HT Sat yes it might have been...but you have to actually win them

apropos nothing; now and again I see this 27goals scored popping up in the apologistas corner.

Well lets look a little closer

Just under half of those goals have been scored in the last 3 games Vs the bottom 3 Clubs, with the added advantage(?) of 2 home games

14 games in we have;
F27 A19 for 21 Pts

last 3 games
F13 A5 for 7Pts

So in the previous 11 games we scored F14 A14...for 14Pts

rippin it up here boss.

yes; I know he's not going anywhere soon.

No; I don't have to like it much

btw, yes; I hope we smash the Boro

I personally don't see anything wrong with changing your mind on a manager. It takes a stretch of time to validate true quality which is why some of these entrenched 'told you so' views held by some are even more embarassing. AVB had success at Porto but failure in England, the jury was out and his career at a precipice but he's returned to having success. Nothing wrong with changing your mind as the facts change. Some managers suit different leagues different clubs and different players. You only have to look in Italy where s manager can get fired by one top club then hired by another and win the league.

Overall I agree with the principle that the Everton board should be more ambitious with any future managerial appointments.

There's some absolute bobbins being spouted in this thread.

Saturday was frustrating, but we've been playing some boss togger of late, I like the current style of play the attacking prowess and confidence that's flowing through the side. Yes, we need to tighten up a bit at the back, and solve the keeper issue.

But those calling for Martinez head at this point are on another planet imo. This time last season I'd have happily waved him off, but the penny finally dropped with him and he changed the way we were playing, he's still a young manager and he's learning all the time. He's doing a fine job at present, and I think we could achieve something this season, hopefully with tonight being part of that.
