Reality Check - what is successful for Allardyce?

On his past record, Allardyce should have the experience to keep us clear of relegation. Let's see what more he can achieve. To reach seventh place would be a great challenge and the limit of our resources.

However, once we are safe, the style of football he adopts will become more significant to the fans. Fans at Newcastle, Blackburn and West Ham all demanded something more than he could offer.

I'm not banking on a good cup run.

Allardyce is ambitious for European success. He did amazingly well at Bolton by attracting some class players despite working with a tight-fisted chairman.
He must see his big chance now with the budget we've got. I certainly don't think he'll be offski as soon as some do.

In fairness I bet Blackburn, West Ham and Newcastle would have been more successful with sam at the helm than what they have put up with since he left.
I’m not a fan of Allardyce but I kind of think this has the “right club at the right time” situation about it. This job allows him to show his legacy as a credible premier league manager - not just a survival expert.
In fairness I’m not fearing relegation now.

So you dont think he'll be gone tomorrow then?

Top 10 IMO.

We were so abysmally poor that I was seriously thinking we were going to be relegated.. seriously, it was as bad as anything I've ever seen in my 30 years of watching this team.

You may say that a team with Rooney, Sigs and some of the other players we have should be aiming a bit higher, but you have to take it step by step.

The first step was to plug our woeful backline, and so far so good. 3 clean sheets in our last 4 games (if you count the West Ham game which he wasn't in charge "officially") and we restricted a rampant Liverpool to very few clear chances. The next step is to obviously make us a threat going forward, as fans won't accept the type of performance we saw at Anfield the longer he is in job. In fact, many might want him to make an impression in the home game against Chelsea. January is an important time for us, we need to improve our output at full back and upfront most of all then maybe we can have a real crack at the top 7 and the FA Cup.

I would imagine Sam will be here for at least 18 months, any more will depend on what he achieves.

To me, "succes" in that time frame would be winning a trophy or at least reaching a final, and qualifying for the Europa League by virtue of our League place. Obviously that isn't real success, but the finest manager in the world won't get us winning the league by 2018, so we have to take it one step at a time.

I hope Sam gets rid of the loser mentality in the club - thinking that reaching a semi-final is an achievement, going to places like Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea etc and hoping to keep the score down and so on.
