Reality Check - what is successful for Allardyce?

By recruiting better and smarter, by planning for the future so it's sustainable and not dependant on selling. I don't know, my comment is based upon the assumption that Moshiri is serious and has plans. Pie in the sky, maybe but we will find out.

Tottenham have managed to bridge the gap, why can't we?

Tottenham have got the money! Financially, they are the sixth biggest club in the league, while we come mid-table.

Tottenham accounts for the year to June 30, 2016
Turnover £210m (6th highest in the league)
Wages £100m (6th highest, 48% of turnover)
Profit before tax £38m (up from £12m in 2015)

Everton accounts for the year to May 31 2016
Turnover £122m (11th highest in the league)
Wages £84m (10th joint highest, 69% of turnover)
Loss before tax £24m (down from £4m profit in 2015)

Yet we’ve outspent 2 of those teams along with Liverpool and Spurs in the last window.

I think some people seriously underestimate how much Moshiri has spent and will do more so.

If the man is worth 2billion you can’t expect him to gamble that half that on a football team. I worry that villa are the potential blue print.
He has spent a lot but not on the quality of players that the top 6 would be interested.

Oh well, may as well give up now then,no point even trying. Football has cycles, I am hoping the wheel is about to turn in our favour. I am being optimistic. I don't concern myself with the wealth of others, all we can do is take lessons and try and emulate off field success to breed on field success.

Tottenham still had to bridge that gap, you're pointing out an already across scenario.

The world has moved on. Top draw players are not attracted to Everton, we are not paying the same wages as the top 6, we don’t offer London (which plays a factor for overseas players) and we don’t have the recent history that attract names.

Even with the horrid start we had, 7th should be the minimum.
Who above us do we genuinely believe are better than us?!

This season - Mid table 13th or better and a cup run (6th Round or better)
Next season - if hes still here he needs to have us close to the top 6 or in it, otherwise he end up getting sacked
Season after - I doubt he will be here at this point, even if he was somewhat successful.

I'm mental like but I'm starting to wonder if we can still get 7th this season. The gap between Burnley isn't something that (with some good signings in Jan and a bit of a run) we can't make up.

You know what, I'm just goiing to give up supporting then, no point is there, cripes alive.

In all honesty I think Leicester are a better side, Southampton are. Probably Watford, and Burnley are much more resilient.

I see us finishing around 11th.

Leicester perhaps, at a push.
Soton absolutely not and Watford, again- i'll give you mate.

Outside the top 10 would be a failure imo.

Firstly, who are the 6 clubs that, historically, have been more successful than us. I can count only 3.

Secondly Allardyce has only signed an 18 month contract, not a 3 year one.

We also need to take account of the circumstances behind his appointment. I don't think there's any doubt that there was one reason, and one reason only behind his appointment, and that is premier survival, so the bar to measure success has been set very low from the outset. So if he keeps us up, then he's done what the board hired him to do. What happens next depends on HOW he kept us up. If we finish 7/9th, comfortably clear of relegation, and with a decent cup run (or at least a decent showing against the RS in R3), then I think the board will keep him on for the remainder of his contract. Anything less and I believe the board will replace him in the summer, having done what was expected of him.

It's possible that Allardyce then proves to be the man to take us forward and he has a very successful second season. In which case he will probably be rewarded with an extended contract. I personally don't see this happening but hey, if you'd asked me 6 months ago, Sam Allardyce was literally the last person I expected to be manager of our football club.

This.

The ball really is in his court :

It's probably his biggest and last club job at the top level, that he's going to get.

He will know that the chances are he'll get replaced in the Summer with a sexy foreign manager.

However' if from now until the end of the season, he completely turns the team around with a cup run, maybe a Europa place ( not saying that's going to happen by the way ), then the club would have to think twice about getting rid of him.

There's a massive incentive for him to do well during his time at Everton, this potentially could be his legacy, rather than being remembered as a dodgy hoofball merchant.

I don't like the fella, but so far he hasn't put a foot wrong.

Considering how bad we were 3 weeks ago if he can get us finishing in the top 8 then that's a big success. Would definitely him a big budgets in the summer if that ends up being the case.

He was brought in however purely to keep us safe and that's what we have to settle for come May.

He's even talking about the players he brings in making or breaking his tenure here, so as you say, he's realistic about his situation. I have been pleasantly surprised by him so far, in the things he's said and done, and his handling of Klopp yesterday was classic TV.

Incidentally, if he does turn into the right manager to take us forward, then the board have been handed one massive get out of jail free card, because I guarantee you they never looked beyond premiership survival when appointing him.

I'm starting to like him, mate, and I think from his perspective he can prove people wrong with us. I reckon he see's himself in the same light as Redknapp did when he took the Spurs job and will think he can kick us on. Let's see what happens.
