Reality Check - what is successful for Allardyce?

Top 8 is a good job, he took over midway through so didn't have the pre-season or time to assess the squad.
Top 7 is successful as other teams had a head start, and i think if RK stayed 7th wouldn't have done him any harm.

But it's not really Top 7, is it? There are the Top 6 and then there are the rest.

Seventh place is just best of the rest. It may earn a place in the Europa League, but for most clubs that is a dubious honour.

It usually means a disruptive start to the season for a club lacking the resources to compete at home and in Europe.

Everton are historically the seventh most successful club in England by trophies won.

Everton paid the 10th highest salaries last season.

We all spunked our pants when we Moshiri came in net worth £1.7b (2.3usd)

The reality is that he is about the 15th richest owner in English football. When players like Sigi are going for close to £50m and Champions League level players are £75-200m, football is a market that makes Billionaires look poor.
Manchester City probably have a squad value close to £1billion in todays market. Moshiri will never spent that amount on a squad.

Even with a billionaire owner, we are further away from competing with with the top four - who are far far away now and only increasing this gap.

Putting aside unrealistic ambition of Top 4 and taking survival this year as a minimal. Over the next three season, what would you think Allardyce needs to achieve to be deemed successful?
Firstly, who are the 6 clubs that, historically, have been more successful than us. I can count only 3.

Secondly Allardyce has only signed an 18 month contract, not a 3 year one.

We also need to take account of the circumstances behind his appointment. I don't think there's any doubt that there was one reason, and one reason only behind his appointment, and that is premier survival, so the bar to measure success has been set very low from the outset. So if he keeps us up, then he's done what the board hired him to do. What happens next depends on HOW he kept us up. If we finish 7/9th, comfortably clear of relegation, and with a decent cup run (or at least a decent showing against the RS in R3), then I think the board will keep him on for the remainder of his contract. Anything less and I believe the board will replace him in the summer, having done what was expected of him.

It's possible that Allardyce then proves to be the man to take us forward and he has a very successful second season. In which case he will probably be rewarded with an extended contract. I personally don't see this happening but hey, if you'd asked me 6 months ago, Sam Allardyce was literally the last person I expected to be manager of our football club.

The question should have been "how does he keep his job beyond this season".

For me, the answer would be 7th. Look at the table and Burnley are well ahead but whose to say if they wont fall off 2nd half of the season.

Conversely, he may keep his job if we finish 8th simply because of Burnley being so far ahead.

I also feel that the January signings will play a major part. He needs to show he can sign a top player in jan who does well for us.

I understand what you are saying but winning a cup is largely luck unless you are one of the big 4/5. Who you get in a draw, what side the opposition put out, how people perform / injuries on the day - all combine positively and negatively. We are definitely due a trophy though.

League position is the real indicator of a managers performance.

When to the meaning of that word change?

When you needed to spend a over a billion to put together a squad, stadium and setup capable of challenging Man United, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal. The current owner does not have the cash to challenge these guys. As someone said earlier - they are over the hill and far away.

We can dream of a Leicester... but that ship has sailed and the richest clubs have fought back by spending at ever greater levels.

Yet we’ve outspent 2 of those teams along with Liverpool and Spurs in the last window.

I think some people seriously underestimate how much Moshiri has spent and will do more so.

top ten and with that draw for the cup its hard to tell what to expect from it.

on the other side, if i wanted reallity check, i would never start following football. so battle for euro places and fa cup please

Getting us back to where we were. A team who never wins anything or competes against the big boys but is stil “the best of the rest”.

I actually have a good feeling about Big Sam as our manager. The last time he had players near this quality was at Bolton. This season top half. If he gets another season European places.

He does the best he can do with the squad at his disposal, this season, have to say 7th but afterwards, we need to see some progress.

Seventh place is best of the rest. What progress do you have you mind beyond that?

How can the club possibly match the spending power of the top six clubs?

By recruiting better and smarter, by planning for the future so it's sustainable and not dependant on selling. I don't know, my comment is based upon the assumption that Moshiri is serious and has plans. Pie in the sky, maybe but we will find out.

Tottenham have managed to bridge the gap, why can't we?
