Reality Check - what is successful for Allardyce?

My expectation completely depends on what level of investment he’s given.

With the squad we’ve got now, I’d expect him to make us difficult to beat & put is in a solid 7th, maybe 6th or 5th. That’s based on the standard of the league now.

If the board are serious & we can attract the next level of player, then obviously expectation goes up.

5th with the squad we have now? Put the crack pipe down.

8th should now be the minimum, though, I still think 7th is up for grabs.

As soon as Burnley, Watford, etc hit 40 points, their players will start to put their flip flops on. Our players won’t be able to do that, because we won’t accept just bobbing along.

7th is the highest we could go. Huge gulf between us and the top 6 even if we were at full strength. With 9 injuries and the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool virtually injury free (and a huge lead) then anything above 7th looks impossible.

IMO the current squad is good enough for at least 7th currently, any more than that we would need at least 2-3 players at the very min.

But even 7th is gonna be a struggle this season, Watford and Burnley have a healthy lead.

The top 6 squads are miles and miles better tbh. And as you say, the points gap to Watford, Burnley etc would be difficult even if we were playing well. Which we aren’t really.

Fat Sam isn't my first choice to be the Everton manager but so far, as others have said, he hasn't put a foot wrong.

His first task is to stabilise the club which is reflected in clean sheets and climbing up the table. He has to get the team playing well again if you factor in the lack of offensive play during the merseyside derby. I think a sense of direction is more important than getting seventh spot after our dismal failure in the transfer window and european campaign. Taking a step back in order to go two step forwards is what we should be doing right now. The thing is the top six are getting further away from us because they're able to invest heavily in the right players while we are falling behind in spending on the wrong players. Let's face it, Bill Kenwright and Farad Moshiri haven't got a clue on how to build a club to greatness. Both individuals are important to Everton's future. Particularly Bill's sense of values and Moshiri's ambition. If Big fat Sam can help build a bridgehead for us to kick on then I shall deem his time at Everton as a success.

If Sam can get us 10 more points before Jan, and then with players back, sold and bought in Jan to get the right mix, 7th should be achievable.
That would be success for the season.
Then decide if he is right to carry on next year.

The state of the league is that we will probably finish 7th 8th even though we were terrible at the start of the season. A lot of weak teams in the division. Next year breaking beyond 6th would be a very good season.
There is hardly any difference between a good and poor season.

If we finish 7th he deserves to see our his contract IMO unless an exceptional manager becomes available.
Why mate. Surely we must learn the lessons of Bobby and Ronny before handing out any contract extensions.

He has 18 months. Lets see how he does in the final 12 months. If he looks like he can move us on then fair play to the man.
