Realistic position in the League

The other thing to consider with spurs is that they are (currently) pretty toothless in front of goal. Their starting striker is Defoe ffs.

If we played every game with last nights intensity, then there would be nothing stopping us from challenging for fourth. Realistically I'd say the bottom end of the European places; 6th would be a brilliant finish, considering the money being spent elsewhere.

I'd also really like to see a strong showing in both domestic cup competitions. I don't think that's too much to ask, considering the strength of our first 11.

We should be always thinking 1st....... giant killers or not. I think we are all programmed for 6th through 8th because of our recent history. Growing up during the Catterick days I always felt we could be top whether realistically or not. I still have that dream today every season. Money can't buy passion.

On the back of one game champions of course.

Over a season my usual 7th or 8th thats where i see us no more no less/

We have a better squad than last season. Spurs are going to be worse than they were before. Arsenal isn't going to be as good as they were with Van Persie. Newcastle is going to be good, but I certainly don't think they have a stronger squad than us (especially if we can add one or two more faces). All that said, I'll say 5th for us this season. Maybe a tad optimistic, but I think there's reason to be this season.

Who's definetly better (at least 'on paper').

Utd - however their injury situation has to be a concern (why would it clear up just like that) plus European commitments may stretch them.
Citeh - their depth is definetly a strength though again Europe commitments could cause a few hiccups.
Chelski - I think they are much stronger though I question their defence .. and in recent seasons we have taken a lot of points off them

.. as for the rest I don't think they've strengthened / stronger than last year. The RS and Spurs are in transition and it remains to be seen if their managers can cut the mustard with one of the bigger teams and the expectations that come with that. Newcastle - not sure about, their defence is questionable, I wonder how long Ba and Cisse will stay focused and they have European commitments too which which will consume their resources and energy.
Arsenal - is anyone left there ? Strange goings on, stable, good defence .. as for the rest of it hmmm.

If we get some of these teams immediate pre or post European games I see no reason why at least 4th. isn't a realistic proposition.

totally agree ..

.. and you never know, some forgotten superstar may have watched that game the other night and thought .. hang on, join Everton on a season loan, play my socks off, help them win the league, send my stock rising and get back on the gravy train again.

Yes, the eternal optimist.

I think 3rd is a lofty but attainable goal. It'll take some injury luck, and some boss play along with no large sales. If I had to guess a position, I'd guess 6th. But truthfully, 3-8 can be pretty bunched up, so anything is possible.

I think 4-6 is attainable. Arsenal are going to be at our level without RVP and Spurs are cursed with Villas Boas. You can probably slot in United, City, and Chelsea for the top 3, but after that it's up for grabs and we're in a prime position.
