My issues with the buying and wearing of a poppy are complex. I find it despicable that a government can laud it’s ex soldiers and hold parades etc. for them but leave aspects of their welfare to charity. I also find it incomprehensible that we say that these ex soldiers sacrificed so much for our freedoms and then vent our anger on those who choose to express that freedom by not buying or wearing a poppy.

Agree completely. It’s same way in the US regarding the whole standing for the flag controversy. People get so outraged over someone not participating in what is really just a token gesture, yet then turn around and continually vote to elect politicians who send them to fight endless wars and underfund their care once they return home. Also, as you said, if we don’t even have the basic freedom to choose to wear/not wear a poppy, or stand/sit for the flag and national anthem, what was their sacrifice even for in the first place?

Aye, the whole complaint of people not wearing poppies goes against the principle of freedom (or our sense of freedom) and the right to choose.

These are the things that so many fought and died for and the rights that people cherish - it's almost an oxymoron to bemoan when people display them.

There's a huge difference between making decisions, like you have rightfully done, and showing actual disrespect to the poppy campaign and those who died.

For me, it's worrying that, like so many other issues, it's becoming a polarised debate: those who'll laugh at poppies and for those who it's like fashion.

Live and let live.
