Current Affairs Poppy season crassness

Every man and his dog should be legally bound to wear a poppy and be frog marched to a cenotaph to bask in the glory of war and stand in awe at the array of ex service personnel standing pin straight with rows of shiny meddles hanging off their chests.

'Meaningful'.

This is just a monster from a 1950s horror film.

When I were't nipper people wore poppies the day or so before Remembrance Day. These were folk who had actually fought in both world wars and lost comrades and loved ones.

A minute's silence was observed around whatever war memorial stood in towns and cities and then people went away and got on with their lives.

Incredibly, the Poppy thing has become a media-driven industry with smirking TV celebs sitting on studio couches - poppies stuck on their shirt fronts two weeks before the event.

I wouldn't mind so much if we had learned from our war experiences as a country but if you look around we don't appear to have. So what's it all for?

It’s just virtue signalling at its finest.

Americanisation of our culture is very real.

The entire point of it is that it's a subtle symbol for those that fought and died for our freedoms, not some crass display "my poppy is bigger than urs and send them back".

Lol at you blaming us for this. That's your own stuff. We've got absolutely nothing to with poppys or what's going on at some Sainsbury store 90% of Americans never heard of.

We got nothing to do with any of your own holiday and how you all celebrate it.

Out of interest, was the little kick off in the St end today during ‘the last post’ anything of note ?

Look at me, I've got a bigger poppy than you.

Dear god what is wrong with these people. At 11.00am on Thursday pay a respectful one minute silence to those who died fighting and those that fought and have since died. Then on Remembrance Sunday, wear a poppy if you wish, or again just a respectful reflection for the efforts of a passed generation…..
I think it’s because people see it as a badge on honour and not about respecting the sacrifice.

They see war as something to be celebrated because we won and to feel superior rather than to give respect to those who went through the horror of war.

It’s a fetish that completely ignores the reality of things.

Granted my experience is limited, but the people in my life who experienced it (my grandad was 19 driving a tank in the battle of the bulge) never wanted to even talk about it, let a lot celebrate it.
