Players you thought would be good but turned out not to be so good

Bilyaletednov, Materazzi, Bilic, Williamson, Richard Wright, Steve Simonsen, McCall, Nyarko - I also agree with the John Collins shout.

For very different reasons every one of these came offering some hope and with a reputation. They all left with me feeling spectacularly underwhelmed! There are many others.
Spot on . I thought Danny Williamson was going to be great. I'll also chuck in Vinny Samways

Jelavic - Just not good enough after his brief purple patch.

Klaassen - Weak as p*ss, slow and no heart whatsoever.

Sandro - Joker.

Kroldrup - Coward.

Jo - Just a turd player.

Van Der Meyde - Crock whose head went.

Beattie - Never did it like he did for his old club.

Andy Johnson - See James Beattie (not helped by being made to run the channels).

Bilyaletdinov - "Give him a go through the middle".

Manuel Fernandes - Did well on loan for us but where did he wind up in the end?

Ashley Williams - Terrible, terrible player it turned out.

Michael Keane - Big, slow, clumsy, wet lettuce.

Kanchelskis especially. That 1995-96 side was fantastic, full of players who had ability, belief and confidence and yet he was clearly miles better than all of them. The combination of him leaving and Parkinson getting injured wrecked this club for ages.

I genuinely thought we had signed a headless chicken from United and wasnt enthusiastic about him. His standard that season is as high as I've seen from an Everton player. He was unstoppable on his day. Basically I'm saying the opposite to the OP's question.

After seeing him in a couple of pre-season games I knew that Alex Nyarko was the new Patrick Viera. Didn't quite pan out that way.

Nyarko was the biggest let down for me, and his complete failure, combined with both Jeffers and Rooney leaving at the 1st opportunity, even though they where 'Evertonians', made me realise this club cannot have nice things in the modern SKY era.

That remains the case to this day. :(

Barkley.

He's a very good player, at Champions League and International level, but I think we all expected him to be at the Lampard/Gerrard level.
That’s a great shout. When he arrived on the scene he looked like a natural (similar to Rooney), problem is he continued to play like a street footballer with no tactical awareness when he should have been developing into a pro. He’s gone through multiple coaches who have found it hard to coach him. Just don’t think he has it upstairs.

"all the tools, no idea where the toolbox is"
