Players you got it totally wrong about

don't remember the ratcliffe incident but wish I had seen it. he was our only player with a bit of nastiness in him I thought through the glory years but somehow managed to get away with it. I remember Alan Biley and first time I heard the chicken with no head phrase. there was Alan Ainscow around that time too. didn't he come with a massive rep?

Had forgotten all about Ainscow. Don't remember anything about him as a player. This has made me think of a few oldies - Imre Varadi, Peter Eastoe, Mick Ferguson to name just a few. In those days there was no football on TV apart from MOTD highlights and there was no Internet so I can't say I had any expectations of any of our signings.

just re-read that...makes me sound like a dinosaur...!

wouldn't worry. I remember all the names and I am only 19. kind of. probably saw al of them play but at the age I was I don't remember things like what expectations were or anything, just how bad some of the hairstyles were. most of what I think I can remember is probably just what my dad said on the way home. ainscow apparently tried his heart out in one game and then said it was to remind other clubs he was available. didn't make him popular

Thought Li Tie had a decent season in 02/03, played some great through balls for Radzinski to go on and miss and generally a neat tidy player. Probably too lightweight overall though, would've been interesting to see how he'd have got on in his second season if he hadn't have broken his leg early on. I remember being completely unimpressed by the signing of Mark Pembridge but he actually did better than I thought he would, scored a few decent goals and worked hard, same goes for Kilbane.

that reminds me, I was a real apologist for Radzinski. Was convinced he would come good. think my reasoning was that he was at least worrying defenders with his pace and the goals would come. they didn't obviously and probably never would have

Keown used to be met with donkey calls from the Street end for his first season. Turned out a machine of a defender.
Good shout that - remember Keown struggling at first and looking shaky. He got it together and just took over. Brute of a defender when he wanted to be - can't have been many harder centre half pairings than Dave Watson and Martin Keown.

Sort of like Beardsly in being one of the better players we've had at a particular position, but stayed too short to become a real hero.

Always remember being on holiday with my dad in 1992, and we read in the paper that we'd just signed Paul Rideout.

"We'll win nothing signing rubbish like him" was my dad's retort, which remains rather amusing in hindsight.

remember how uninspiring that signing seemed. can't remember why was so disappointed as he had never let anyone down but was convinced it was a waste of time.

of all the young players who came through the one I saw a couple of times and thought would be a legend for us was Tony Grant. can't even remember what he looked like now

Do ye remember the one about Peter Johnson telling Howard Kendall that he had to get Rideout around that time - like it's has to be your #1 priority? Paul Rideout thinks Howard, I heard Rangers were thinking of getting rid, never really rated him but if that's what the chairman wants.
Does the deal, Rideout shows up at training and HK sees Peter Johnson storming across Bellefield, saying WTF is that guy doing with a blue shirt on? But you said to get Rideout, says Howard. No, no no! I said get DRIED OUT!!

I honestly thought Naismith was a good get.

remember checking every day to see if he had signed. thinking about it though no-one really seemed sure what he was good at, I just got caught up in the drama

fantastic. wish it was true. heard crazy rumours at the time about him. am sure all exagerrated

I thought Distin was massively overpriced considering Portsmouth were having a firesale and let Kranjcar go for £3mil less but has been a solid player for us.

I thought Andy Van der Meyde was going to be the next Kanchelskis :(
