Players you got it totally wrong about

Slightly left field, and misjudged in the other way, but for me, Norman Hunter.

He signed for Bristol City when they got into 1st Div in late 70s. Tagged as "Bite yer legs", the locals were expecting as such. But he was actually a quality player. Hard as nails, but his left peg could charm snakes. Pretty much kept them up for 3 years.

talking to the generation before me though that was pretty common opinion on that whole Leeds team that they were all class players that had no need to be as dirty as they were

Thought Gibson was gonna be gash, turns out he's boss. Wrote Coleman off last season and now look. At the same time, though, I thought Bily and Naismith would be boss.

James Vaughan, genuinely thought we had the world class forward we needed with him, oh how wrong it turned out

held back from mentioning him cos thought people would bring up the injuries but he really did look like he had everything and the injuries shouldn't explain why he has come nowhere near

remember bumping into andy holden in town one Saturday night years back, mate recognized him and collared him and ended up talking to him for about half an hour about all sorts of stuff efc related and he was going on about a 15 yo kid they had that was potentially gonna be better than Rooney and be massive for us for years to come, still remember how enthused he was over the lad as he went on about his pace touch etc, such a shame he never got over the setbacks

Legs like tree trunks Dave Clements was past his best , but a class act served us well great passer of the ball also we had Colin Todd from Derby who did not do as well as Clements!
Was Todd not a success with us? Before my time but always heard him described as a real class player.

There was one season in early 70s when they sort of cut out or at least minimised the dodgy stuff and they were awesome. Still dirty Leeds though in my mind!!!

met an old mate from work in the pub just after Rooney went who said he had heard from someone in the club that there was a lad coming through who would make us forget about Rooney. took it with a pinch of salt at the time but he must have meant Vaughan. we did have that moment when he broke Rooney's record but it felt like it was the start of something big definitely. still hope the lad gets somewhere near what he looked capable of, even if its not with us

Peter Reid. Think we had offered Bolton about £750,000 12-18 months before. Then he got injured and was out for a good while, never seemed to be the same player. When we bought him for 60K I thought Kendall had lost the plot, an injury prone over weight has been - HOW WRONG WAS I????

60 grand for Coleman, 60 grand for Reid. imagine 11 players like them. total spend just slightly more than a week of Beckham's wages at PSG. (my maths could be ropey though)

thats almost word for word what Holden said to my mate when i was their, tbh i was a bit lost during the convo as him and my mate just bounced back and forth talking about loads of other stuff, just that part always stuck with us clearly

for what it was worth Holden was a totally sound bloke, stopped in the road by two half pissed blues and gave us the time and seemed to actually enjoy the banter, all credit to him and hope hes part of us for a good few years more

by all accounts vaughans a decent lad who never went off the rails so with luck he should have a good 5-7 years and hope he one day gets a shot at the prem again

to be fair i hate the little **** for how he left etc but h played the best footy of his career for us by miles

I think he had a good start under Royle, but then he was utter kack apart from one season under Smith which culminated in him refusing the contract.
