Wayne Rooney writing in the Sunday Times that the government are a disgrace, and how his feelings have been hurt because he thinks footballers have been made a scapegoat for failing to accept any pay cut whilst their lower paid colleagues working in the same business as them are forced to do so. The same Wayne Rooney that was pursued by HMRC for six million pounds in tax evasion:

The worst bit about it is him saying a 30% pay cut would “financially ruin” some players.

Im crying for them...

The big issue here is how a Minister of the British Government pinpointed and set Premier League footballers up as a target due to their salaries ;-( The clubs who furlonged their non playing staff were the ones doing wrong not the players as no one knows at ground roots levels what or who they donate to :-( The NHS does great work but its not the responsibility of a football player to pay for it , its the Government of Britian to pay for it through its tax system etc ! I live in France and the french government have'nt come out demanding Neymar to pay for their health system as its not his responsibility :-(

Everton thankfully are paying their non playing staff their wages and DBB has said they will be paid again when the matches take place if rescheduled :) Players like Coleman, Mina and Richarlison have donated money and its been announced but we don't know who else may have done secretly as lots of people donate privately ;-)

How come Hancock has'nt demanded singers/groups who cancelled gigs in UK to pay for the staff at the venues that were closed due to them not playing?

The UK government saying everyone has to unite and be together but threw the footballers under the bus showing great unity ;-) Whether you agree or not with whether the players need to pay for others wages or for the NHS judge the players and if their not doing what you thinkthey should do unfollow them on whatever social media they have it, don't buy their jersey or whatever but its not just them who are'nt 'paying' for this pandemic! The big issue was how certain clubs manipulated a system given by the UK government, supposedly to help business, for their benefit ;-( Questions should be asked at the Finance Department of the UK government how what they said was to help small/medium business' is being used by Premier League clubs with serious revenues
I agree with most of what you say, but I think it's important for highly paid stars to set an example and they have failed woefully in this respect. In this, they have been bolstered by the blatant self-interest of the PFA run by a despot who is paid over £2 million per year.
One other point: If a club is not in the secure position that Liverpool and Tottenham are, then players effectively paying non-playing staff's wages does actually save the taxpayer money and therefore helps the NHS as well as helping the club to survive.

What about the ones who it genuinely would have huge financial implications for? Why should they have to shoulder a burden no other high paying professions are being asked to?

They didn't. He was asked a question about footballers by a Journo. he just gave an answer

It would have huge consequences for a few of the younger lads who are literally spending all their dosh on cars and wears to try and fit in with the established first teamers.

If clubs furlough anyone, it should be players. Being capped at £2,500 a month would soon bring them down to earth.

Im not sure what you mean.

I personally know several “high paid professionals” who have either been made redundant or furloughed. The 80% furlow has a far greater impact on them than a footballer losing 30% of their salary.

You are really suggesting we should be worried about any of the players in the top two divisions losing 30% of their salary ?

Calvert Lewin was on about £20k a week when he wasn’t even scoring for us.

If a 30% pay cut would cause financial hardship as a Prem or Championship footballer then that’s on them I’m afraid. I’m more concerned about the groundsman on £20k a year who may not be able to pay his rent.

There is something in what the players say, why is the media not focusing all extravagantly wealthy people to do their bit. Might it be their owners would come under scrutiny. However they should have gave up some of their wealth and then pointed the figure. Wayne Rooney writing in a newspaper column, something he has been well paid for while having someone ghost it is not the place.
IT goes to the heart of the problems in Britian when the majority have to rely on the charity of a few to survive. I don't agree with the trickle down economy but I can understand it, the charity economy is something perverse.
