Players salaries

The players have never said they wont help, the only issue has been how do they help properly.

They have been painted in a very bad light by a tory rat trying to deflect blame and by horrid club owners whos only interest is their own bottom line.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes Premier League footballers will want to contribute...

"I do believe that 99 per cent of footballers originate from the streets of Berwick, Bootle, Bolton, Solihull, Dudley - they're not from Hampstead and Knightsbridge - they've got good souls and are good people. They've just done well, they're just lucky enough to be in the one per cent of people who dream of being a footballer and make it.

"I think if you asked those Premier League players, do they want to contribute to the NHS, to the communities, to the challenge the country is facing now, they'd say absolutely they do.

As I already said, I don't really care if they take pay cuts or not. They pay a fair share.

But I do find it embarrassing for top flight clubs to be claiming off a job retention scheme designed to stop firms going under because of the virus.

Players could do something and I hope they do, but the issue is the owners and their greed, not the players.

The whole issue of money in football will come up more because of this though. Football isn't real life and that doesn't bother me. I still like it for what it is - a sport. But for others the money does matter.

Spot on, they dont wanna blindly hand over their money to the rats owning the clubs or for the tory rats to spend on a war somewhere.

The PL have proposed that most of the money will go to clubs lower down the league ladder and the National League with a paltry £20M going to the NHS. Chop 30% off their wage and the PFA have stated that's around a £200M loss to the exchequer in tax revenue. It's a no-brainer for any footballer with the slightest social conscience to question that hugely flawed and self interested PL proposal.

They'd be much better ignoring the PL and looking at the idea that Jordan Henderson (credit where it's due) had been knocking around to start a Coronavirus Crisis Fund. That way the exchequer get's it's full whack and the players can put money where they feel it's rightly needed. Something tells me that between the full tax revenue and players donating it'll raise considerably more than the PL proposals and Mike Ashleys of this world.

Ahh...the rough streets of Solihull, one of the most affluent towns in the country! Do 99% of Premier League players come from anywhere in the UK? No!! So, why should they care?

And as for saying that only 1% of those who dream, make it as a footballer....that doesn't even scratch the surface.....

Mr. Neville usually talks some sense, but this post is utter nonsense.

Well I must confess I thought it a bit silly he didnt add foreign town names.

Footballers do earn silly money but they pay a hell of a lot of tax so contribute to society in that way. I don't necessarily agree the amount that they earn but it's not like they're screwing the country over.

This 30% paycut for 12 months is it really to pay the NHS or will this be used to help pay off any future unforeseen pandemic which has threated the league future revenues.

If this is agreed surely it will offset existing contract to pay Sky/BT/Broadcasting non completion of this season.

Also threats of UEFA for seasons to be finished by Aug 3 so they can have their Champions League and Europa League finals means that Null and Void is very much still on the table as clubs will not want to miss out on finishing and entering these comps next season.

I feel a crisis point is coming

If the league season doesn't get finished Everton will owe around 30m and that's mid range, Liverpool 55m. The clubs would like a 30% paycut to cover that I'm sure.

Agreed however the high up the league the more prize money for example Burnley say they'll lose £50m:

They will receive £34m like all clubs and £43m television rights plus £21m for 10th position as they lay.

Burnley I would have about £40m as season on wages so a 30% would come in at £28m for 20/21.

From Watford down, I could see these clubs having problems but manageable problems.

I feel the PFA will be under huge pressure to bend under these very extreme circumstances when they see the days turn to weeks then months and FA, Premier League, UEFA and Governments start turning up the heat plus on a non-playing front, hundreds and potentially thousands of more deaths in the upcoming weeks and months.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a Player's Revolt in this country or potentially Europe over they're contracts and health conditions.

Clubs will have huge headaches and in club fighting if players are threated over forcing them to simply play a sport.

Words just fail me.

The Professional Footballers' Association says proposals for a 30% pay cut for Premier League players would be "detrimental to our NHS".

The PFA also called on the league to increase its own £20m charity pledge.

The government has said it is "concerned" by what it called "infighting".

The league wants players to take a 30% salary cut in order to protect jobs, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But the union says that equates to more than £500m in wage reductions, and a loss in tax contributions of more than £200m to the UK government.

The PFA are against pay cuts for professional players on account of the government would get less tax revenue from them.

Right about now I couldn’t care less if the football never returned.

PL players are greedy and uncaring, otherwise they wouldn't be blocking a proposal for a 30% wage cut.
Matt Hancock's statement has had no impact on me whatsoever. I am quite capable of seeing for myself that they are greedy and uncaring.
This is a football forum - I agree that wealthy companies shouldn't be allowed to take advantage of the government's rescue scheme. If you want to broaden the discussion beyond football this could be a very long night.
They pay taxes that should be used to fund things like the NHS. They pay obscene taxes to reflect their obscene wages. Whilst offering even more financial support would be nice why should anybody be forced into giving to charity?

Would you refuse a higher salary? Are you donating a chunk of your salary?
