Phil Neville - Captain of Everton

Surely not? I would have thought asking the club captain to think of us 1st is a given and not remotely controversial[/QUOTE1]

He's just paying respects to the team that started his a career, gave him a chance, and as posted before a player like Rooney should take note. No shame in that. His brother and life long friends play for them. When Jags scored the 1st thing he did was shake Paul Scholes hand, a player and friend who he's know since he was 14 or something.

He respects United, but doesnt mean he'll bow down to them as he's always wanted to prove himself to us. He was the only one diving into crunching tackles on Sunday, and everyone remebers that stormer of a tackle on Ronaldo that kick started our season.

Reading todays papers leading Everton out as club captain is his proudest moment, and the FA Cup final will be one of his career highlights. Everyone who comes to club says Neville is the one that helps them, makes them feel at home, makes them comfortable. The kids respect him, the team respect him.
He's a professional, loyal, and proud player, which is why he'll end his career with us after signing a new contract.

As one of the Mirror columists always writes - Neville is a dying breed of player and club captain because of what he represents. Loyalty, respect, dignity. Who else does that remind you of? A certain manager?

See i don't want my club captain immediately after we get through to a major final calmly shaking hands with an old team-mate, i don't see that as a good thing. I want him running to Jag congratulating him.
Then waving his fist at the united fans mouthing "Get in my son, look what i have got now you bunch of moaning manc g*ts". Then running to the blue army kissing the badge and scraping the united tattoo off his bum with acid as a symbol of his love for the blues, then and only then do i want him to think, maybe i should shake hands with the ginger lad from the other side. Doesn't have to be exactly like that but something similar would suffice

And that's why you'd never make an Everton captain.

okay, it's cool to know your expectations.

it can also work to accept him for what he is/does.......it's easy to do for me. If it's an impossibility for you, then, please.... whatever works for you.

Imagine if Rooney behaved towards us in the way that Pip does to the United fans. It's just respect, mate. Nothing more and nothing less. Pip's a good bloke, an honest professional. He was at United a long time so it's not surprising he has affection for the fans. That's a good thing, surely? It shows us that some players don't view the fans as merely a necessary evil.

Thats exactly what I do want to see our club captain do. We give no quarter in battle, but we show respect after (win, lose or draw). That's how I want our captain to behave because thats how I hope I would behave and how I have taught others to behave.

So with that frame of mind you must think that Rooney is in the right and should do all that kind of stuff against us?

Neville's got common sense, respect and dignity - true sportsmanship which is sorly missed in the modern game full of diving cheats, money grabbing merc players, ego's, managerial bitching, and one up manship.

He did all that celebrating straight after by the way.

So let me clarify this, you think it's perfectly acceptable for the club captain to not once but twice in the space of 5 mins to think of the opposition first? I could maybe give you the 1st one especially with it being down there end but the 2nd is totally unacceptable. You really think Scholes would have thought any different of neville if he had thought of him 2nd. Its just nonsense

@kenada_blue

you pointed great qualities in our captain, I and many others in this post agree and appreciate what pips represent. It's great you highlight this as pips being so unassuming, may be passed over for a deserved pat on the back.

thanks and well done

Yet another of those ****ty moments that should never happen in sport.

Its not about if Scholes are any other player doing what Neville did, its about what Neville's morals are representing the club on the pitch.

Its just a difference of opinion. You want a club captain that will strut and laugh in the face of his opponents, almost giving the big V-sign and being the big man. I like a captain that represents a bit of dignity on part of the club, leads by example.

That's why I think Neville rises above it, stands out as a dying breed of captain with respect. Would Terry, Gerrard, Fabregas, etc all do the same? Course they wouldnt. Reason being is that they're over paid badge kissing egotistical "we've beaten lower league Southampton 25-0, have that!" captains so full of themselves to a point that they even thing they ARE Mr Chelsea, Mr Liverpool etc.

Neville doesnt think he's bigger than the club. He's not MR Everton. What he did on Sunday is what he does to every team he's played against win lose of draw. It just happened to be the team that took him as a kid and gave him a oppoutunity.

We kick off when Rooney celebrates against us, Neville is clever enough not to. Its called respect.

You have it in for him AndreiK for some reason, but he has had a great season - as a player - and as captain.
