Official: "Neville to leave the blues"

It sums up the desperate measures some fellow blues stoop down to, just to wind up the red side - except the red side have the easy retort that their captain has won all the cups for their own club.

It's as bad as we don't care what the red side say...what the heck do we care?

We care enough to mention them, twice, in our own club anthem...

Phil Neville was just another example of how we like to talk ourselves down when comparing to the two red teams. It does not do our hunt for a winning mentality any good (which would have seen some draws this season turn to wins).
Football fans in local football rivalry shock :o

those throw ins and stepovers will be missed *cries whilst watching neville videos

Do you think he should have dropped himself and put himself on the transfer list?

No, obviously not but in my local sport (AFL) when a captain starts to slow down, he passes on the armband to someone who can lead on the pitch, by example and can lift a team when they need it most.

He doesn't pick himself, but clinging onto that captains armband to the bloody end did not help the progress and development of our club and must of had a factor in him being picked most weeks.

This being said I hold nothing against him, hope he does well in whatever he moves onto, but I have not been happy with him for at least the last 3+ years.

Been a good servant, legs have gone and perhaps should have left 2 seasons ago but thanks for everything Pip. Thought he'd join our coaching staff, somebody else may benefit long term there now.

Have to say, great club captain imo. Had dignity, spoke highly of the club, had class. Can hold his head up high through Moyes era.

Good luck to him.

He never gave anything less than his best for us. I hope people remember that.

Totally agree. He may be past his prime and it may be time to go but he has been the complete professional and I wish him all the best. Cheers Phil

Can you imagine the stick he'd get if tomorrows headline was 'Ex-Man Utd player Phil Neville refuses everton captaincy'. I for one would feel I was letting the club and the manager down if it was me in his boots and I was asked by the manager, as he clearly thought he had something to offer, even though most of us saw him finished at best last year.

BTW, He wouldn't have played a single game for us at CM if I was manager as he's never been good enough for that position. That takes nothing away from him though. That's on the fella who picked him.

2 Neville incidents that stick to mind that sum him up for me.
Yes he was played too often, and yes he wasn't very good, but that's Moyes' fault, not his.
What he clearly added to the team though behind the scenes was clear to see and regularly commented on by everyone in the game. As opposed to the mercenaries who just do a job at the likes of City, and the moronic detachment of tweeting footballers like Rio Ferdinand and the whole of Arsenal, Neville is charismatic, humorous, and human. Not a great footballer though, but for the other attributes he offered, i think that's alright :)
Enjoying reading back on some of these..

"We love to joke. Before one team meal, Phil Neville called me up 10 minutes before and said everyone had to dress smartly. I took it seriously and turned up all smart, in a jacket and tie, and all the guys were sitting there in jeans, T-shirts and trainers."

Some unfair posts in here. People are allowed to have a negative opinion of Neville without being called sad or pathetic. Not on that.

I just think it's disrespectful to be overjoyed over the announcement of a player who has been our captain for 5 years.

I hate to bring "them" in to it but do you think Carragher would have received this kind of reaction upon announcing his retirement? I don't for one minute. I know Carragher is a local lad but he wasn't their captain.

It's similar to the fact that some Everton fans love to take the piss out of Howard Kendall - the greatest manager in the history of our club - for being a piss head and propping up bars all over Walton, whereas that lot worship every blade of grass that Kenny Dalglish walks on. Why are we like this? I don't get it. Are we too embarrassed to recognise a true professional because of their technical shortcomings?

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel the sadness I felt when Arteta or Cahill left but it's fairly significant and I think despite the millions he earned whilst here (totally irrelevant by the way, IMO) Neville deserves some respect.
