Neville has naff all to do with your two examples here:
- Carragher wasn't captain and thus wasn't responsible for the mentality of the team. He also got dropped when it was obvious his legs didn't carry him at the highest level like they used to.
- Kendall was a winner, and those taking the piss are rightly criticised by myself and many others (but that still leaves me free to criticise Neville's tenure as captain).
- Neville's infamous comment about how we are massively over-achieving to even finish top 10 was the final nail in the coffin for many of us.
He was a substandard captain and an average squad player. Off the pitch, he was a good servant, well-liked by all and a model pro.
Sounds fair?
So are you saying that because Neville was captain and responsible for the mentality of the team that he's failed as captain? I know we've bottled it in some big games but Neville can't shoulder all the blame, after all he's the only one in our current squad who has actually won trophies. We've 10 other players and a manager who are responsible for this also. Also Carragher was vice captain and very frequently lead the side in Gerrard's absence.
Neville has been dropped, admittedly a bit late but he's been out of the squad despite being fit for 3 games now. I'm positive that if
Moyes had been able to bring in the players he wanted in the summer (I.E. Fer) then Neville would have started very few games this year. It's not his fault we've got a crap centre midfield and that we've got few players who would be suited to being captain.
I'm not so much pulling people up on criticising Neville's shortcomings as a football player but if you're going to do that then at least recognise his strengths. It's the lack of respect. Some people seem to think he's stolen a living off us and
Moyes has been playing him for the last 8 years for a laugh. Which is ridiculous.
Those "top 10" comments were well out of order, I'll agree with that. Maybe he doesn't quite "get" that bit as much as we do but he's not a blue.
Not really very fair comparing people pleased that a poor footballer is leaving their club, to those mocking a once dignified man with a disease.
As for that lot with carra, well he was another grim footballer who could only make it in this country were we applaud lumping the ball out of play, if you want to hold up them lot sycophantically claiming anyone whos been the bogs in anfield is a legend and world class as an example fair enough, that sort of stuff isn't really for me
Maybe it's not the ideal comparison but it's something that sticks out to me as a difference in mentality between the two clubs.
And Carragher was a very good defender.
