Official: "Neville to leave the blues"

Yes, I am glad to see him go, as he is a season or two past his use-by date. His leaving will free up some valuable cash. That said, he has been a loyal and committed servant of our club. Some of the comments here have been way too vitriolic. He's not Nick Barmby ffs.

I can't put into words how happy I am. Farewell to one of the absolute worst players I've seen at Everton.

He'll be lucky to get a game in League One.

I hate to bring "them" in to it but do you think Carragher would have received this kind of reaction upon announcing his retirement? I don't for one minute. I know Carragher is a local lad but he wasn't their captain.

It's similar to the fact that some Everton fans love to take the piss out of Howard Kendall - the greatest manager in the history of our club - for being a piss head and propping up bars all over Walton, whereas that lot worship every blade of grass that Kenny Dalglish walks on. Why are we like this? I don't get it.

Neville has naff all to do with your two examples here:

- Carragher wasn't captain and thus wasn't responsible for the mentality of the team. He also got dropped when it was obvious his legs didn't carry him at the highest level like they used to.

- Kendall was a winner, and those taking the piss are rightly criticised by myself and many others (but that still leaves me free to criticise Neville's tenure as captain).

- Neville's infamous comment about how we are massively over-achieving to even finish top 10 was the final nail in the coffin for many of us.

He was a substandard captain and an average squad player. Off the pitch, he was a good servant, well-liked by all and a model pro.

Sounds fair?

I just think it's disrespectful to be overjoyed over the announcement of a player who has been our captain for 5 years.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel the sadness I felt when Arteta or Cahill left but it's fairly significant and I think despite the millions he earned whilst here (totally irrelevant by the way, IMO) Neville deserves some respect.

Not really very fair comparing people pleased that a poor footballer is leaving their club, to those mocking a once dignified man with a disease.

As for that lot with carra, well he was another grim footballer who could only make it in this country were we applaud lumping the ball out of play, if you want to hold up them lot sycophantically claiming anyone whos been the bogs in anfield is a legend and world class as an example fair enough, that sort of stuff isn't really for me

If our young players picked up Phil's work ethic we'd have a CL team on our hands. Talent is talent ... sometimes people just have more than other people. If you want to try to judge people equally you can ask if they made the most of what talent they did have. There aren't many players in any sport who did more to put themselves in a place to succeed than Phil.

I like Phil Neville. I don't think he should have played football for us this season but that aside he has done a good job for us in the balance and I wish him well in his future endeavours.

If he were willing I'd have him do nothing in the next few months but teach his work ethic, fitness routine and preparation methods to our young players.

As usual, I'm with this guy. Well said Nigel

Could not agree more mate

Great post

Its apparent that his legs aren't able to handle the week to week grind of the prem anymore (he did have a solid game against UTD in August when he had a full offseason of rest) and any notion that he could still do it in the prem were blown up after looking out of his depth against Oldham.

People forget that for a time a few years back there was a time in which it seemed our fair club would get down on one knee and kiss the gold ring of the bigger moneyied squads. However Pip was not one of them and always seemed to play his best against said clubs. Its not a considence that up until the 2011-12 season we had a better record when he was in the starting 11.

I also got to see him hit a screamer at Molineux and thought he was personally pointing at me after the goal. I bet we all felt like that then.

Given that they appear to be mates, Nev's ambition to be a manager and playing the same position I also think he had an impact helping to turn Coleman into a player that was pretty hopeless defensively into a solid defender who should be at RB for quite a while with us.

Part of me wishes he would just retire a blue, but if he still wants and needs to play, I expect some bottom 5 or promoted club will find him useful.

Cheers to Phil, I hope we send him off well. Excellent captain and professional, wish more at the club would have his work ethic and understanding of the game. He was just not as gifted a player. Manmarked Gareth Bale out of the game a year or two ago, crunched Ronaldo to turn our season around, and gave us a number of other boss moments. I'll choose to remember him for the good he brought, and also smile as I look forward as this means that Moyes is acknowledging what many of us have been saying for a while.

Also means that Moyes must like what he's seeing in Stones as cover for Coleman. Good luck Pip, thanks for the service to the club.
