No Europa please

I'd love a Europa League run if we done it properly. If only because it would establish us with some sort of European reputation. I don't subscribe to the notion it's champions league or nothing. There's far more prestige in the Europa League than the league cup. And while I'd rather the FA Cup, there wouldn't be much between that and the EL either. Silverware is silverware as far as I'm concerned at the moment.

looking at the teams left in it the past two seasons we would stand a good chance of winning it, I would fancy us as 2nd favourites this year behind Napoli imo

haven't read the replies, but i bet damn well brennan has pointed out that it doesn't actually hinder our league performances! we have a better squad now. We aren't a team like birmingham, swansea or newcastle so it won't afffect us like it did with them. said before, if you draw up our 2nd XI, that's enough to be trusted upon for the majority of europa league games.

This will probably be stronger next season, but i'd be pretty confident of that team picking up enough points to progress, with the mixture of some first teamers to possibly play the toughest team in the group.

we thrive to get into europe, haven't been there for a couple of seasons, but belong there. Can't just say CL or nothing, that's not going to attract better players.

Efc should be in europe.

We're not one of those plastic clubs like villa or newcastle that fight all year to get in europe and then **** it off cos they think they are too big for it (they are not - no club is)

If we are in the europa next season i would be proud as ****.

Plus Martinez is due a run in it after leaving wigan!

League finishes over the last 10 years:

2003/04 - 39
2004/05 - 61
2005/06 - 50
2006/07 - 58
2007/08 - 65
2008/09 - 63
2009/10 - 61
2010/11 - 54
2011/12 - 56
2012/13 - 63

Our highest points total in the last ten years came in 2007/08, when we also progressed the furthest in European competition during that ten years, the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

There's no evidence to support the idea that European competition hurts our league performance, if anything the record suggests our position in the league is improved by competing in Europe.

The only time when competing in Europe really hurt our league position was when we finished 4th, funnily enough....

That's a point I've said to a lot that **** on the Europa league.

Now, I don't like the format, the Champs League drop outs, etc but clubs that fail in the league and blame it are the ones that didn't prepare for it.

Knowing Martinez too he'll keep it fresh and rotate more. Also get better calibre players in the transfer window.

Being in Europe, attracts higher quality players and means we stand a better chance of retaining the current players within the squad.

Players like to play in Europe, whether its the CL or EL, they like that stuff.

I love it myself, yes it could possibly stretch us a bit thin, but as a fan, theres nothing better than testing yourself against Europes Elite and Semi- Elite.

We also have a young crop of players who would certainly benefit from a few games here and there.

What are your thoughts?

If, after a valiant attempt for the title, we have a late collapse and finish 5th or 6th and get into the Europa - whilst it would obviously cap a fairly successful season, am I alone in worrying that, for our squad and financial limitations, it could lead to us really struggling next season in the Premier League?

Obviously in life you have to just take what comes and nobody is going to turn it down, but it just gets you thinking that the margin between the Champions League places and the cash and PR and ending up in a Europa League group with three anonymous teams from Eastern Europe is massive.

mate first time i disagree with you.

I would defo want to see us in europe, would travel too.

Newcastle Swansea couldnt hack it...that doesnt mean we couldnt.

Yes, because who would want to have nights like this again, despite the loss...

Haha, you know it....

Agree with all of the above.

Swansea are also a club with a stadium that seats about 20,000 and they've been in the Premier League for going on 3 years. We have quite a bit more in the way of resources than them.

I don't think we'd be nearly as stretched in Europa as they are now.
