I agree, but not all forwards drift out wide every attack, which is what strikers at Everton do. Van Persie doesn't (Rooney does the running), neither does Aguero, Ba etc. and it's no coincidence that those players score goals.
I think you have to say sometimes that you have a striker, and his main job is to score goals. Everything else is secondary. That hasn't been the case at Everton over the last decade in the main.
I'm not calling for Jelavic to be allowed to goal hang, but I don't think he should be told to be the target man, the first line of defence and a poacher at the same time.
Why can't we have Anichebe or Naismith play the free role defensively off the striker and play Jelavic as a goalscorer, with Mirallas supporting from an inside forward role? Genuine question.
