Aguero doesn't? He does it more than anyone in the league. And how many times does Van Persie cut in from the right and shoot? I agree with the rest of what you're saying, though. Get Jelavic to worry about scoring goals before anything else.

Aguero does it because he's utterly amazing and has the ability to, but his primary job is to be a goalscorer. If the goals dried up, he'd be told to get back to basics, Dzeko would play the target man whilst Aguero ran off the shoulder, or Tevez would play to hassle the back line whilst Aguero drops in between the centre halves.

Van Persie drifts wide but he doesn't do so for defensive reasons; it's to pull away the centre half before making the late clever run into space. Those two are for me right up there with the worlds best so the things they do is difficult to compare to Jelavic.

I think the primary job of a striker at Everton is to get to the first ball if the ball is punted long into the channels and close down the opposition full backs in possession.

If it were me, I'd definitely say to him "you know what, just stick it in the net lad, Vic and Naisy will do the running today." and let him play how he wants against Oldham at the least. Show him a bit of faith; that you believe he's going to do the business.

This is exactly what I mean.

I agree, but not all forwards drift out wide every attack, which is what strikers at Everton do. Van Persie doesn't (Rooney does the running), neither does Aguero, Ba etc. and it's no coincidence that those players score goals.

I think you have to say sometimes that you have a striker, and his main job is to score goals. Everything else is secondary. That hasn't been the case at Everton over the last decade in the main.

I'm not calling for Jelavic to be allowed to goal hang, but I don't think he should be told to be the target man, the first line of defence and a poacher at the same time.

Why can't we have Anichebe or Naismith play the free role defensively off the striker and play Jelavic as a goalscorer, with Mirallas supporting from an inside forward role? Genuine question.

The thing is Jelavic is doing fine with the workload. He's also getting into positions to get shots off too but he's not producing the goods. I haven't seen or heard any persuasive evidence to suggest that Jelavic was asked to play a lot differently last season. Difference this season is that he isn't putting the chances away.

It's definitely worth changing things up with regards to our forward line, I'm not convinced it will see an upturn in Jelavic's form however.

Is having Anichebe up top going to help him slot that chance last night or the one against Southampton?

The difference between Jelavic's game in the last match of the season against Newcastle and now is staggering mate.

For example, go here:

... and play that video, and all you have to do is look at the very first attack. The ball is sent to the flanks, ball is worked to Felli - and Jelavic is right between the centre halves running off the shoulder.

This season, he would have been the one coming deep to win that flick, and even if it did work to Fellaini, he'd be behind the play out wide, completely uninvolved in the attack.

Oh, that was a sitter.

But look at every centre forward in the league. How many of them stay static through the middle? It's inevitable you move around the pitch to find yourself space.

I think it's a pretty poor excuse for why someone's playing badly. I'm not saying his first few months were a fluke but football's littered with players who go through a hot patch. The likes of Amir Zaki and Santa Cruz are names that spring to mind.

Best goalscorers are usually static through the middle, Van Nistelrooy, Shearer, Owen.

No, this season he would have been offisde or spooned the 2nd chance into Row Z.

As Dave said, its not a problem the way hes playing, its the fact that hes simply not performing.
