Netherlands piloting women to play men's football

Are teams going to be forced to play women? That seems to be what you imply.

And my god, imagine a society so stupid that by mutual consent players, a club and a federation engage in a study to find out if you are right in your assumptions. The humanity!

Well if teams are not forced to play/sign women whats the point when most clubs would opt against signing them? Surely that would only cause outrage, and an association formed by female footballers to bring even more red tape into the league - Sol Campbell cant get a PL managers job because he's black so God help all the female players who are already at a physical disadvantage.

If society want to do more studies have them study if lightweights can fight heavyweights

Or if dwarfs can compete in the NBA.

Stupidity at its finest.

Sol Campbell can't get a PL managers job because he is a knobhead.

Your NBA example doesn't work by the way, there are plenty of undersized NBA players who have been top players.

What is the harm in a study that, if you are right, will vindicate your position and put pay to this idea forever?

I believe in a number of sports, at an elite level, youre probably correct. But I believe in others you're wrong. What's the harm in finding out scientifically rather than saying "well its obvious innit?"

Beryl Burton was one of the best athletes this country ever produced and was routinely beating men because the women's categories simply offered her no competition.

But where is the equality in that? If men want to play in the women’s league why can’t they? Has to be an even playing field.

As I say big can of worms for me.

I do think mixed gender sports will be a thing at some point but not at the expense of our current systems, I think a new association will be formed for this type of thing.

Fair enough on that last point, but why does it all have to be about equality? A woman isn't ever going to be at Premier League level, but it shouldn't stop her from playing on a mens team down the ladder.

But that right there is more sexist than claiming gender sports should be split.

"Sorry luv you aint good enough to ever play with the men at the top level but here be happy in the conference league with all the lard arse blokes who havent made it big".

For me thats rubbish - let women be the best they can be in their own divison that doesn't put them at a disadvantage or have safety / ethical concerns.

Can't wait to see it...

Because the study is inherently flawed from the get go - they'll never sample them in a proper setting ie. The PL/Championship level so they'll end up doing studies in the dutch 10th divison or something - find women can compete at that level and then they'll be "championing" the results and claiming this is now proof that sports should be not split by gender etc which is rubbish.

Nothing stopping a female competitor from being the "messi" of the female league - it shouldn't be "oh you are very good therefore you have to play with the men" thats demeaning towards the other female competitors and is the definition of sexism.

This is a very good point to be fair.

Ok, I've read the full statement from the KNVB here

Currently all age group football and "B" (amateur/outside the pyramid that ends with the Eredivisie) in the Netherlands is allowed to be mixed. As best as I can tell the world hasn't spun off it's axis and you and I were unaware of this until this morning.

The player in question was playing mixed under 19 football until the end of this season and has been granted dispensation to play "A" football in the 4th tier because she wants to and the club think she's good enough. The pilot is about seeing if what works in youth group "A" football and senior "B" football works in senior football. The question isn't about forcing players to be selected, it's about allowing opportunity and extending what is already working in other areas of Dutch football.

Who knows if a woman could make it at the highest level? As I say there are positions within a team that don’t really require many physical attributes, she could be as technically gifted as a De Brunye who can pick a pass out of nowhere and assist for fun.

I believe the physicality of the league is where problems may occurr when it comes to defensive positions in particularly Especially in the Premier League.

I don’t really have anything else to add on this really. I think they should just leave it all as it is and create a league association that allows all genders to compete with each other, it keeps everybody happy then.

The study would lead to further studies. You are extrapolating wildly from a place with no basis to a place even further away from reason. It's a small study in a small league testing out the potential viability of whether to proceed with more investigations. People within the pilot aren't coming at this from any dangerous or ridiculous place from what I can tell.

It's just looking at extending the way the rest of dutch football works. Thats all.

I remember when we played football with work and a lady joined in one time.

She was awful, but the next day all the managers etc where saying she was the best player on the pitch because she managed to kick the ball.

I think we have a a lot of similar minded people in here.
