My thoughts on the possible signing of Landon Donovan.

In related news I was up early Yesterday and bored, so I put on ESPN and watched Chivas vs Galaxy.

Didnt watch it all, but Donovan was gash, Beckham was stroking some mean balls around.

Chivas were winning 1-0 with 3mins left when I stopped watching.

So.............

HES GASH MOIST, DONT SIGN HIM.

They also had Alexis Lalas on some kind of sniper nest on the roof doing some commentary, plus Angel still plays FFS.

I watched the game too. I apologize. The Galaxy were crap, and have been crap this season. I say that as a fan.

LD played withdrawn forward, saw no service for a half. Moved back to RM and started to energize the pathetic offense we had.

Still not his best.

His performance with the USMNT will be more indicative imo.

I always thought it would be more like half that. Good player but he's 30 playing in a crap league with one full year left on his contract.

Wonder what we can get him for? 4m?

Wasn't THT saying on twits earlier that it may be another loan followed by signing him when he's out of contract?

To clarify ; The MLS will want £6-£8m Id imagine , but WE wont be paying all of that ...

I really don't see why MLS would just 'let him go' before the start of the season.

Regardless, his contract still doesn't end in the summer !

I think his personal relationship with Garber will help.

Remember that LA's strategy revolves around designated players. Trying to replace a DP in the middle of a season is extremely difficult - notably because you are managing your meager salary cap. Making movement in the fall gives you more flexibility to work with the rest of the roster, their salaries and fill in the gaps where necessary. Also allows you to promote the new DP heading into the new season - which LA will do.

They are going to want someone high profile as a replacement. That's typically done in the fall. And they'll have this entire year to plan for it if Landon has already indicated he wants out.

The Galaxy are having a TERRIBLE season this year though, so unless things turn and turn quick, a dismantling/exodus of sorts may be coming. And with Donovan being the most likely of their 3 to leave, if the Galaxy stand in his way, that would not bode well.

It wouldn't be about getting a few million in the bank, it would be about starting a rebuild with a new designated player - and they will have to be free of landon to make that happen.

Bingo.

If LA don't turn it around soon, they will not even make the playoffs (to be clear, 10 of 19 teams make the playoffs, so not making them is *dire*). AEG will not stand for this however. If LA continues to be in free-fall for the next two months look for movement in the summer. Which may mean an even earlier exodus depending on what LA wants. CONCACAF Champions League being in the fall may complicate matters and keep him around.

Again, LA will ALWAYS have 3 DPs.

EDIT: Shouldn't we combine this with the GIANT LD thread? We could hit 400K views at this rate.

Not just them - do you like Gatorade ??? . Others too , I understand ...

Are we getting some marketing out of this? Cause good lord we should.

Anyone who tells me that hiring him doesn't have a financial benefit, please see LCAB's post.

(I wonder who the "others" are? Seiko? ESPN? Kinda funny that there's a sponsor pool helping him move. I'd think they want to throw some promotional dollars behind it.)

I'm fairly sure someone at the club read Kay's breakdown of the financial benefits of Donovan signing and thought, "Oh right yeah".
