My thoughts on the possible signing of Landon Donovan.

As someone in the US, I'll disagree. People here know the old big 4 - ManU, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool. There is a fast growing awareness of Tottenham and City. Even so, if you ask most "soccer aware" but not avid fans who their team was, more often than not, the answer I get is Fulham. (I know, it astounds me too)

From McBride, to Keller, to Bocanegra, to Johnson, to Dempsey - they have had at least one american field player for a long time.

And in fairness, we've had Howard through it all, but goalkeepers are not thought of in the same way. Donovan's first stint did more to raise Everton in the American mind than years of Howard.

Dempsey, Howard, and Donovan all in the Everton team would be HUGE for us and our exposure, and the time couldn't be more right. The American market is RIPE and still largely unclaimed as far as EPL teams go. People have "heard of" teams, but most have never actively "rooted for" or considered themselves real fans of a particular team.

Absolutely. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/final-day-epl-season-seen-183507570--sow.html

The US market will be won by the teams with interesting players to Americans, not necessarily the best teams. America also love underdogs, and Everton surely are that. Hating ManU/City will certainly be among the first sentiments to catch fire.

Tell me how many Fulham kits you've seen in the US? I'm in Chicago - a good soccer city - and I've never seen one in 11 years. I saw a Dusseldorf kit at the Lincoln Park Zoo this past weekend. Not one Fulham kit in 11 years but Dusseldorf finds a way to represent.

How many Kappa kits have you seen in the U.S.? I've only seen one - AS Roma. Much like Everton, Fulham suffers from a marketing and distribution perspective due to their kit supplier. Hopefully, the Nike partnership will open up some doors.

I always thought it would be more like half that. Good player but he's 30 playing in a crap league with one full year left on his contract.

Wonder what we can get him for? 4m?

Wasn't THT saying on twits earlier that it may be another loan followed by signing him when he's out of contract?

He's not out of contract until the end of 2013 unfortunately.

Oh does it? Here's the tweet if you're interested:

Landon has an exit plan , 3rd loan spell then sign permanently. Contract runs out next summer so should be easier to force perm through #efc

Landon will continue at his current form to at least age 35. Mark it down. This means at least 4 good years from him, which would be worth a 4 mil or so fee. After that, who cares.

This has just made my day.. the mere thought of Landon being an Everton player again just makes me smile :)

His contract 100% runs until the end of the 2013 MLS season, which would be in the winter time.

Donovan himself has already expressed his openness to another short-term loan next winter, but despite the mutual admiration, it appears unlikely that Donovan and Everton will be able to unite on a permanent basis until after the 2013 MLS season, when his contract is up.

Glad you're happy, I'm bemused as his contract DOES NOT finish at either the END of a proposed 3rd loan from Jan onwards or even in the summer of 2013...

It elapses at the END of 2013....

Unless the MLS has changed their contract with him....which seems extremely odd indeed.
