Are the Stone Temple Pilots underrated, or are they perfectly rated? I mean they had a couple of really good records and are basically an afterthought from the mid 90's. But maybe that's just about right?
The Offspring are another one who got zero respect from the UK music press at the time, ridiculed as a third-rate Nirvana clone cashing in - but they have some tunes. Still throw on Ixnay now and again.

Singer is an intelligent bloke who always seemed to not be taking things too seriously, whilst some of his dimmer contemporaries where laden with angst and gloom.

A funny one was Bush. British band who nobody ever heard of in Britain. Huge in the States.

Another funny one was Candlebox. Proof that anyone who could fart half decent in Seattle was getting signed to a major label. I had never even heard of them...and I was pretty clued in on the scene. Can't believe their debut sold 4 million records. I mean it wasn't awful, but it was just funny how anything from Seattle was blowing up.

Think he had a PhD in microbiology

Good ad for the grad program*--look at our one successful alumnus, who dropped out and got rich in a punk band.

*to be fair, I'm not suggesting his grad program was bad, I'm just commenting on grad programs in general. He might have graduated from a school that can get jobs for graduates.

Haven’t seen them mentioned so I’m going to throw in Beastie Boys. I think most have them down as the late 80s frat boy version, but over the following 25 years, they were real innovators. Their musical knowledge, talent and range don’t get the deserved credit, and they were trailblazers in respect of stuff like label ownership, creating clothing brands and shops, fanzine production, online releases, etc. Unique band IMO, and very much misunderstood and underrated.

I don't they're underrated at all. They're Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers and are almost universally loved.

I'd have to agree with this. They had staying power and with Ill Communication I think their artistry was truly put on the map

Have to agree with this. They should probably be ranked higher in "who's the best rapper lists," which seem to mention tons of guys who had one hit demo tape but got run over by a subway train while laying down crap graffiti, but in the main they've been well recognized for years.

The kids aren’t alright is a fantastic song. By contrast, pretty fly for a white guy is something I can’t stand to listen to. Think people judge them by the latter tune too much.

Disagree that they’re “universally loved”. Those who were around when they first broke think they’re a bit of a joke, and they picked up a bit of a hipster skater crowd after ‘Check Your Head’ and ‘Ill Communication’. I think a lot of their better stuff (albeit IMO of course) goes under the radar.
