Most Underrated Bands Of All Time.

Have to agree with this. They should probably be ranked higher in "who's the best rapper lists," which seem to mention tons of guys who had one hit demo tape but got run over by a subway train while laying down crap graffiti, but in the main they've been well recognized for years.

Not that widely IMO - only generally by a relatively small group of revisionist hipster media types. Same mindset that only gave ‘Paul’s Boutique’ its due credit well after the event.

Disagree that they’re “universally loved”. Those who were around when they first broke think they’re a bit of a joke, and they picked up a bit of a hipster skater crowd after ‘Check Your Head’ and ‘Ill Communication’. I think a lot of their better stuff (albeit IMO of course) goes under the radar.

Maybe it's all just white kids in the US, but people have been buying their stuff. From the venerable wiki:

"The Beastie Boys have sold 26 million records in the United States and 50 million records worldwide, making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. With seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004, the Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide."

I guess. Garth Brooks sold 140 million albums. He's a tremendous artist with some really fabulous songs--should I hate on him because country music is terrible? He's no Alan Jackson. Not all things cut the same way, but I think Beastie Boys are pretty well recognized, at least in the US for people from 30-50 or so. I can't speak for the youts.

*Brooks once sold a "rock album" under a fictitious name just for fun and it reached #2 on US charts. Maybe we should consider Garth Brooks one of the most underrated artists of all time.

That’s not actually a huge number of sales over a 30+ year career when you average it out, and sales only equate to popularity. I’m just saying I think they are underrated from an overall ‘value to music’ point of view. I guess the Hall Of Fame entry goes against me a bit on that. Dunno, I just always feel they are restricted to the rap music conversation rather than the music as a whole conversation. What can I say? They’re my favourite band of all time and I’m biased... lol

Just in case you missed it, have highlighted some relevant part of the text making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. With seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004, the Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide

I think the States ‘gets’ them more than we do TBF. The early press they got here was ultra negative, and it’s only more recently that the view has changed (probably post Yauch’s Tibet activism, which in itself is another thing that surprises people - most associate that with with other more cynical participants, a point tacitly acknowledged by Horowitz in the excellent Beastie Boys book).

Yeah exactly, those are very much rap related. I don’t deny they’ve had their love from that community - I’m saying I think they transcend that and deserve wider credit. You’re saying you think they’ve had that wider credit, and you’ve made some great points. I’m not saying I’m right, I’m just a lid chatting wham on the inter web! :);)

Fair enough, I guess that's the essence of under-rated.
