Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

There seem to have been a lot of people I admire who have passed away over the last 6 months or so, but his death hit me like a bolt. I'm not sure why.

I do think he was arguably the greatest cricketer of all time. He was a genuine magician withe the ball with absolutely no question marks over his action unlike some I could mention. But he was also an absolutely brilliant fielder and handy with the bat too. He was also a winner. But most of all he was just a very likeable person. He was the Aussies version of Ian Botham, just better.
Exactly this. He was so knowledgeable about cricket too. As a broadcaster he was excellent. But, as you rightly say, just an immensely likeable person.

I absolutely love St Emillion. Gorgeous medieval town with a beautiful town square. I've had many a glass of SE red there.
A very good friend was a sommelier and owned a wine shop in SE.
He in turn was very friendly with Jean Luc Thenevin , one of the great winemakers and I was privileged to be invited to his vineyard for some tastings. I can't tell you how good his wine was , retal price of some of his wine was over 300 euros a bottle - madness!
JLT also rented out a gorgeous house on his estate and Mick Jagger was staying there at the time , sadly I didn't get to meet him . But , yeah St Emillion great place. Have a glass of Cheval Blanc if you can Fred.
I'm jealous Jazz. Yeah I loved the red wine from there. Mix of merlot and cabernet but merlot rich iirc. Every bottle we ever bought in France was spot on. If you paid over £3 a bottle it was generally nice stuff. I'm sure they export their crap stuff to us.?

A really good tip I was given on shopping in French supermarkets for wine was that if a Burgundy wine won a gold medal at the Bordeaux Concours ( or vice versa ) it had to be good! My voisin explained that Burgundy hated giving Bordeaux wine the gold medal and of course Bordeaux reciprocated.

you see Argent and Or medal winning wine in all the supermarkets over there some as cheap as 5 euros. There are some tremendous bargains.

Even within Bordeaux appellation you can pick up a Cote de Blaye or the next village along the river Bourg ( a beautiful well rounded red wine ) for a fraction of the price of a Medoc or Pauillac and only a notch or two down in quality.

2003 . 2005 . 2015 and 2016 are the golden vintages to look out for in Bordeaux.

When we had our house in France ( just outside Bordeaux) we used to bring back 150 bottles each time , kept us going for a couple of weeks lol
Not sure whether I mentioned it in here but when I was in Guernsey I met an English chap called Tom who used to own and operate a vineyard in Bordeaux. He was one of the guys i got pissed with until 4am. He lives in Alderney now and is a wine merchant using his contacts from his time in France to bring wine into the Channel Isles. He'd be about the same age as you Jazz.
