I think the main gripe is that this season and for most of the season the football Martinez has the team playing is far too
slow, and he hasn't tried to alter this type of style, it's just bored most of us to tears, and although the fans have let him
know this style stinks, he has carried on regardless.

He must have the backing of the chairman so we will see a lot more of this, although the team will see a lot less of the
support, it will eventually drive thousands away and I think it will show with the number of season tickets we sell
between now and the start of next season.
it's not xfactor where everyone watching gets a vote on what happens, same with the nonsense polls on here. "Ohh the post stoke poll says the fans want him out, but he hasn't been fired yet... kenwrong out""... its ridiculous.

edit: also sitting back and hoofing it at Rom's head wouldnt be exciting either

From all the posts Kiwi, I was under the impression it was to be the next season.
You're right I was very tired when I wrote that and didn't proofread.
This upcoming summer transfer window is so key, whether we can clear out deadwood and bring in quality in key positions remains to be seen.

The booing was only "relentless" on one occasion.

Against Kiev when the team looked leaderless on the pitch and rudderless on the sidelines.

And that booing sparked the team to life in that game otherwise we might have been beaten as comprehensively at home as as we were in the away leg.

What was the game we were winning and people starting booing because we were playing so bad? Loads of people picked up on it on the forum, maybe Villa at 2 up? Not "relentless" but very audible.

QPR.

We were 3-0 up and it was mind numbingly boring and bone numblingly cold.

It was an awful game.....we found ourselves three up with three deflected shots.....Barkley, Mirallas and an own goal when a corner flag bound effort from Naisy hit one of their men and went in off.

With about fifteen minutes to go the team were just playing keepball and the crowd was wanting the kitchen sink chucked at them because we sensed another Sunderland or Saints, so poor were the opposition.

There was a free kick right on the edge of their box.....down the Street.

One of the lads in an earlier post referred to it.

Without one of their players touching the ball it ended up back with Howard.

Thousands of people went ballistic and started booing.....lol

I don't know how anyone can keep saying there's no flexibility about Martinez. Even the example you cite underlines the flexibility of approach: he can set us up as one of the most deadly counter-attacking units in the PL when teams come out to pin us back and retain the ball themselves. That's being flexible. And that's besides the way he has had different formations throughout the season and different roles played by different players (good example of that is the way he has McCarthy pressing on a lot more in the past few weeks rather than have him hanging about in a two man DM).

By and large, he seeks to retain possession and find a way passing through the opposition, and this is something that seems to bother people (principally because the end product this season isn't what it was last season). RM today emphasised the need for a number 10 this summer and how such a player is crucial for us, and if we land the right player that should go a long way to putting right the lack of clear cut chances being created and converted. So the manager knows where we're falling down and is intent on doing something about it (something I think he anticipated last season by signing Eto'o who he may have felt could have provided us with that spark of invention, but it didn't go as planned).

I reject he's a manager doing things over and over in blind faith. I don't think there's anything further than the truth.

And what about the teams that dont pin us back ? We are treated to 90 minutes of sideways passing which happens a hell of a lot more than you would like to admit to. Based on your views i suspect we will beat United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs but get beat by the rest because they sit back and we have no power or creativity.

Playing Osman left wing to maintain possession is laughable mate - barry and mccarthy defensively each week even at 2-0 down ? Sorry Dave but sometimes your loyalty can be a bit of blind faith at times. I admire it but i dont agree with it.
I hope next season he proves me wrong but i have a feeling another season of frustration awaits.

Hopefully the ones who don't return will be the core of the ones who boo'd relentlessly

Also a mediocre season will not drive the fan base away, in the main the support is not fickle

Also being bored to tears, who have you been watching for the last god knows how many years....Barcelona or something.
The main ones who won't return will be the ones who bought a season ticket on the back of Martinez's first season, they
were let down by what they saw this season, let down badly,IMO, by the style of football played. n

BT sport showed an extended interview with Brown shoes before the Sunderland game- in that interview he was saying that the Leicester game from the start of the season was major factor to our failure this season.

I am sorry but the man is a dreamer at best and coupled with the other dreamer in the main stand we are all being tricked except for the players who sussed this out last summer. The job is too big for him and he does,nt have the man management skills to handle the players which I think has been a disgrace the way it,s all been handled since the summer by pushing it all back on to the players and staff at the club.

I only see one outcome to this, more duplicitous statements and excuses for the new season. It,s time we all woke up.

You're being too impatient. That problem you identify is one that's known to the manager and he's trying to address it. He's barely two seasons into his time here and he's already given us a taster of what can happen when things go well for us. I can't be doing with the short term nature of a lot of the analysis of Martinez. It's just governed by a mixture of immediate reverses on the field and some idea that what we should be doing is reverting back to a Moyes type no nonsense, no frills game.

Well if that's what some people want, then count me out. I don't think I'm alone in saying that Martinez came in and won a lot of friends with his positive approach and the attendant results, and that I'm prepared to cut him a lot of slack to see if we can get that back again.

Adopting any other attitude is just typical of the "I want everything now. RIGHT NOW" attitude that stinks in football.

I would say that we would be best to stick with Martinez for now, but it wouldn't take much more to persuade me otherwise. I think he could make or break his career with us through his activity in the transfer market this summer - if he continues to sign dross like McGaedy, Kone or Alcaraz then we are destined to continue our slow descent into the 12th to 16th places in the Prem. Another season like this one and we can probably wave goodbye to Coleman, Stones, Mirallas and Lukaku - none of these lads are born and bred bluenoses remember - and that would be enough to see us in proper bother.

If he can make one decent marquee signing, one promising younger signing and two decent loans, he'll probably be ok. Problem is, I think those signings will in part be dependent on us qualifying for the EL again via the Fair Play provisions, and we are currently sleepwalking through our games so that qualification is heavily in doubt.

Says more about the support than the manager then doesn't it?

What you have said above is sort of why me and you have been at loggerheads most of the season, we wont truly know until the end of next season who is right and wrong. I see signs were he may change something but then revert to type ASAP. For example when he starts 4-4-2 he then takes mirallas off for Osman at the nearest chance and goes 4-1-3-1-1 sort of formation, whilst in one sense this looks like he is flexible, you can see that in another sense he is just going back to tactics he used earlier in the season that never worked. Unfortunately in this game you are judged by last years standards and it couldnt be any more true than for bobby. Last season he showed us what he can do, but as soon as this season started he had many obvious faults.

I can see why you want to give him time, its better to have a go and fail than wonder " what if " but the football win lose or draw is pretty much the same across the board. Favourite players, one winger on the pitch at any one time, keep possession, no urgency in attack, fullbacks kept back instead of doing what they have done well for the last few years raiding the channels. Just stuff that has become ovbious really.
