Current Affairs London Protests

Yes thats probably fair. I have seen many horses ride at that speed on protests though. I mean from the video the crowd it was surging into looked relatively peaceful, so not sure why they were even using horses? It's an unfortunate accident and obviously I hope both the officer is ok, and that the horse wasn't hit with any objects. I also think police have to think carefully about charging horses into protesters who for the most part are peaceful.

After a largely peaceful day, a small number of people threw projectiles at police, who responded with a mounted charge to push them back. An officer was injured when he was thrown off his horse after it bolted

I do wonder if it’s something that’s sentiment has been really obscured. If the message is to help develop the community around you by shopping locally, rather than at bigger stores that take the mick with employees and take money out of these areas and propagate the cycle, then it’s definitely a decent message.

Yes. I like Joshua and he seems a very articulate guy and to be honest a really good role model not just for the black community but also for young men. However I think we have to be realistic in his judging his understanding of economic theory, and making somewhat subtle distinctions between different approaches. To me at least it seems quite clear what he's looking to say. I suppose we live in a society now where people can look for offence in things and be offended, which is their right, but I try to avoid doing that where possible.

They're very effective at crowd control and a far better choice than using the likes of using vehicles, water canons, CS gas/baton rounds and actual charges.

They also offer a really good visibility of a crowd and are much more dynamic in their movement - can spin on axis, move into agile spaces - compared to vehicles.

Add to that although yesterday's protests may suggest otherwise, people often have an affinity to horses; you can't really say the same about a police carrier.

In reality, they canter during their charge which isn't much different to a person running at high speed, but the psychological impact of their size does the business.

Well in Joshua's case, to trying to keep money in their own community, rather than see money sucked out of their communities thus meaning there is a lack of jobs and opportunities for black people. I don't necessarily agree with Joshua, but what he says seems logical enough.

no mate, there’s a difference between “community” and “segregation”. A community is made up of various races, whether black, Asian, white etc; what Joshua said was segregation, to only spend money in shops whereby the person has the same skin colour as you and boycott those who aren’t

Ridiculous comment, things like this add fuel to the fire

There's no doubt projectiles were thrown at police officers, which is not only wrong but counter productive. I think we've got a lot of angry people currently, not least after the Cummings affair, and some seem to think rules don't apply. Is it clear that the horse the officer was riding was hit?

Seeing a video of police horses being attacked. Now this is going to be complicated. It's already established that in the hierarchy of things racism is worse than a pandemic. So we can all go on the streets with a clear conscience. But animal cruelty. Is that ok if it is in the name of protesting racism? I'm struggling to keep up.

Ok. Yes I see the effectiveness of horses. I've been in a lot of situations, where crowds have been peaceful, and the way the police use them ends up causing a violent situation. I wasn't at the protests yesterday (I'm trying in vain to social distance) but that would be interesting.

I'm not sure it's about a heirachy of things really. You can protest against racism and not hurt animals.

I think it's referred to as separation in that instance. We know that black people are paid less, given less opportunities etc than their white counterparts. As a black person you can either-1 try to change the system, 2) wait for those in power to change or 3) Use your consumer purchasing power to try and redress the imbalance. I mean I'm very much for point 1, but I can understand why some black people would say to spend money supporting their own community so they can begin to cultivate longer term jobs etc.

Separation is a way of trying to justify segregation for yourself. And again he’s not saying supporting your community, he’s supporting your own race by boycotting others.

Why don't people have marches and protests when young girls are abused in Bradford and Rochdale?

Victims are the wrong colour mate - imagine the scandal had groups of 20 odd white blokes targetted and abused young vulnerable ethnic minority girls the left would be in uproar.

Sadly its why I've lost faith over the years that the left is the answer in dealing with this problem - the right likes to pretend that racism doesn't exist whilst the left only thinks racism exists for non whites - neither will ever solve the problem.

What I would give for a modern SDP party to spring up to shake the likes of the current Labour and Lib Dem parties into touch.
