And so another year of Box Office hits and misses comes to a close.
First place goes to the remake of 'Beauty and The Beast' for Disney. Produced with an $160m budget, the film went on to make 1.263.5bn worldwide and the 2017 title for ticket sales in 2017. Get ready as due to this success Disney has 21 live action remakes of its animated films. Dumbo with Colin Farrell and Eva Green Directed by Tim Burton and Aladdin with Will Smith and Naomi Scott are a couple of the next cabs of the rank.
Second, and running on international steam comes 'The Fate of the Furious', part 8? in the series. Accumulating 1.235bn worldwide, 81.7% of its box office comes from International markets which is weird for an American Studio picture. With a lean $225m domestic, the film made 1bn worldwide alone, meaning that this cash cow isn't going anywhere soon. Fast and Furious 9 scheduled for 2020.
Number 3, last major Studio release and only halfway through its run was of course, the highly divisive eighth installment 'Star Wars The Last Jedi' raking in $517 m in 17 days domestically. It also score the second biggest opening of all time and has just crossed the billion dollar threshold.
In at No 4, and the last film to cross the Billion dollar mark and only animated film on this years list 'Despicable Me 3'. Just topping the Billion, it still didn't make as much as 'Minions' in this despicable reality. Animated figures are down this year, with 'Coco' 'The Boss Baby' close to $500m in sales, with 'Cars 3' still pumping out $380m worldwide.
Rounding out the top 5, 'Spiderman : Homecoming' swings in for a reboot. $334m and 880m worldwide. Despite an oversaturated market, there still seems to be room for Spiderman.
The biggest grosser of the year, based on it's 30m production budget goes to Number 6 and Chinese entry 'Wolf Warrior 2'. $870m worldwide with only 2m taken in the US. Its the second highest earning film in a single market all time behind Star Wars TFA. Let me put it this way. It has made more money in China than Avatar did in the US. More money than Titanic made in the U.S. Its the only foreign film to make even the top 100 of highest grossing films worldwide that aren't financed in the US. It's insane how little i know about this film, and how much money it made.
7 and 8 go to a pair of Marvel offerings in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2' and 'Thor : Ragnarok'. Whats to be said that you don't know already? Guardians 2 wasn't the breakout smash of its predecessor, but the film still accumulated a stellar $398m and an $863m take worldwide. Guardians 2 now sits in 5th of the 17 Marvel films released to date. Seems like three times the charm for Thor. Generating huge buzz to the tune of $311m in the US and 848m worldwide. With three films in the top 10, Marvel takes 2.5bn from the 2017 Box Office.
In at No 9, Wonder Woman sashays onto the list with her solo debut. It was the hit Warner and DC desperately needed after the lukewarm response to their cinematic universe. Universally praised, Gal Gadot single handedly puts herself in the A List of all our hearts. In an unusual trajectory, the film now sits at No 21 domestically and No 65 worldwide with $412m domestically and $821m worldwide.
Finally, at No 10, Captain Jack parlays in for what could be his (Depps) last time on deck. Looks like the franchise is running out of wind, but not until there is Pirates 6 loosely scheduled for 2020. A huge dip in previous earnings and spiralling production costs (rumoured to have cost more than $300m to make) and Depps notoriously bad on set behaviour may see Pirates in the brig for an extended spell. $172m and $794m worldwide.
