Landon Donovan

Either bigging up the deal so we're paying his wages/add on's etc (which we're probably being cheap on and trying to get him for free).

Or is another transfer masterstroke by the Blues to try and sign someone and then fail miserabley.
As a Galaxy fan I can confirm that he always has clubs coming after him. Mid MLS season it was Livorno that was trying to pick him up. The manager over there said so in the press and was saying how much he liked Donovan etc... Right before the Everton stuff came out(really like a week or 2 before) Club America in Mexico were trying to get him and their coach was quoted in the papers saying how he would love for Donovan to come down there and that they were trying. Also PSG were rumored this year and we heard Everton earlier in the year also but neither had any quotes from the teams except Everton just recently.

So I think the reason for putting that sentence in a press release is to talk him up but I am sure it isn't a lie.

P.S.
By the way I hope you guys don't mind me impeding into your forum. I have always liked Everton since Howard has been there and if this happens it will put me over the top as a big fan.

I'm not expert but from what I've seen of him he's very different to Fletcher. In terms of positional sense and style of play, completely different players.

ChicagoToffee, is he was to come to Everton, what position would you expect him to play? That question is also aimed at Rook and other American Blues.

He'd play either at CM or on the wing. He's best in open field running so hopefully he'd be used in that capacity. I don't think he's got the size to play up front. His skill is suited to the counter and the run-out.

A question for our American friends. Which Premiere League player can be use to describe Donavan in terms of similar style and attribute?
Fletcher?

Hate to say it but he remind me a bit of Benyaoun. Keeps his nose about with very good pace and silky skills. Has the instinct of being in the right place at the right time for most of his goals.

Out of the list that Axlshwk posted, that was the first name that popped out at me as well.

Glad to have you here.

As for the Galaxy statement, this was my post on the Big Soccer Everton forum regarding just that:

Heh...

Galaxy release a statement that there are a number of clubs interested in Donovan for a three month loan spell.

What's this? Some sort of hardball tactic by the Galaxy, Really,

Come on !!! It's a THREE MONTH LOAN SPELL.

Now if they're talking about a potential option to buy, that's up to the MLS more than the Galaxy.

So, other than the fact that Moyes has made his interest public (versus all of secretive behind the scenes interest apparently), that Timmy has probably put a word in Donovan's ear about Everton, that it would probably be a great fit for all parties, and that Donovan will more than likely get plenty of playing time with us than any of these other reported clubs, yeah, it makes sense for the Galaxy to make that kind of statement.

Oh, and Donovan can nix going somewhere he doesn't want to go, regardless of any loan agreement that the Galaxy approve with any other teams.

Yeah. It'll be Everton or not at all.

(To all Everton supporters: Naturally this line of thought totally precludes Everton's usual ability to totally muck things up in the transfer market as we've so often seen in past transfer dealings)

In other words, the Galaxy probably should have kept mum on the subject as there really isn't any benefit to them (other than keeping Landon from the possibility of getting injured) in trying to somehow lever this into a better deal.

Livorno was linked to several US players after the Confederations Cup, including the Dynamo's Ricardo Clark but nothing came of it. It should be said though that Clark is not re-upping with the Dynamo and will more than likely be off to Europe somewhere in the next transfer window.

This part is confusing. Please elaborate.
We deal with Galaxy for loan but we have to negotiate with MLS for a transfer?
Who has the ownership of the player?

Like i say ill give him a chance and support him - all roads seem lead to having a good player!

Still think its a bad deal given the time he will be with us and his possible adjustment.

a few things to consider.

Pros.

- He is athletic, agile, and fairly nippy.

- He will give his all to make sure he gets to the world cup.

Cons.

- He is quite outspoken and a gobby git.

- He doesn't actually give a damn who he plays for as long as he gets to the World cup.
(major no no in my book)

- The yanks think he really is the dogs dangly bits and can play for any english team he wants. (doubt if he would get in the Sunderland team....)

- He played in the German League which is at best......Poor.

I don't understand that first one. Why is it a big deal that he wants to play for anyone in Europe just to be fit for the MLS start and World Cup. Why is this a bad thing?

Why is it a con that Americans (for the most part) think he's fantastic?

And it's bad that he played for Leverkusen about 6 years ago and struggled as a 21 year old? Ok, but let's not hold that against him too much.
