Landon Donovan

Can't believe Everton won't have a option to buy him. They gave Bayern Munich that option, but they declined in the end. Don't really know that much about Landon Donovan, but I'm more than happy to give him a chance at Everton. Especially seeing all our Americans raving about him.

he's the hardest worker on the american squad, for sure. probably the best, yeah. other than tim the mother******* legend howard.

still, i could see him struggling in the EPL. but maybe he has a better role to fill in our squad than munich had to offer him - we need a hard working, creative midfield player (until arteta gets back).

why not, really? lets do this donovan.

The boss has just been on SSN and was asked about this signing...............how close are you to signing him......'ask me in two weeks time'.................is there something gone wrong with the deal....................'ask me in two weeks time'.................he had that look on his face that said 'piss of Mr Reporter keep your snout out of EFC business.....................its nice:lol::lol:

I know he's just got divorced from his wife and was looking for a move to Europe. I'm sure that if he likes it here a way will be found for him to extend.

As a USA/MLS watcher, I think it's likely that the deal is done but the LA Galaxy don't want it announced until after Christmas. Season tickets and jerseys are popular holiday gifts.

The rumor has Donovan back after March for the start of the MLS season. But the deal will certainly include sticky details like an Everton buyout and/or extension option that cloud whether Donovan is back for the start of the MLS season. And with Becks' return not coming until after the world cup, they team needs Donovan (or some other marketable player) to sell tickets for next season.

A question for our American friends. Which Premiere League player can be use to describe Donavan in terms of similar style and attribute?
Fletcher?

I'd also love to see Everton chase Kyle Beckerman on loan - another CM but much better in a controlled build offense. Excellent distributor. Certainly a no name but he's impressed me greatly when I've seen him play. Any other Yanks care to weigh in?

I'm not expert but from what I've seen of him he's very different to Fletcher. In terms of positional sense and style of play, completely different players.

ChicagoToffee, is he was to come to Everton, what position would you expect him to play? That question is also aimed at Rook and other American Blues.

Although I do like Beckerman, I think the Premier League would be a bit too fast for him.

Don't know who I'd compare Donovan to in the league. Gonna have to think about that one.

The complicated part is that he plays forward for his club and wide midfield for his country and tends to show a little differently in the different roles. In either role, he's an attacking player who excels on the counter-attack. Maybe he's a cross between a Jermaine Defoe and Sean Wright Phillips but also good over a dead ball. Maybe Tierry Henry would be a decent style comparison. I'm sure there's an example of this kind of player all wrapped into one, but it's not coming to me.

In terms of attributes, he's got break-away pace, excellent finishing ability with both feet, and is a strong passer both in possession and on the counter. He's not particularly elaborate with the ball at his feet. He'll beat you with pace, or the give-and-go, but not with a step over or fancy move. But just because he's not "fancy" doesn't mean he's not technical. He's got an excellent first touch. He's always struck dead balls for the USA and Galaxy (until Beckham showed up). He has world class fitness and will work his socks off for an entire match.

He's not big, so don't expect him to get on the end of crosses thrown at his head in the box. He's not someone who is likely to really control the pace of the game (like lets say a Jimmy Bullard) which in my opinion is why he's no longer playing central midfield. There are games where he's got a huge killer instinct to score for himself, and others where he seems more intent on setting up teammates.

When he plays as a wide midfielder for the USA, he will have a propensity to pinch in and let his fullback overlap to create the width.

If you want to see him at his best youtube his goal vs Brazil in the confederations cup this summer. Or his performance vs. Ecuador in a friendly 4-5 years ago where he scored a hat-trick and looked like Lionel Messi.
