January Transfer Window 2026

If the right players aren't available we shouldn't panic.

Strand Larson being priced at £50m suggests that the market is not rational.
Yeah, this is the problem. We hear a lot of (what appear to be) cliches about January being a difficult market unless you're prepared to pay over the odds and we tend to not believe it a lot of the time, but stuff like this should illustrate why it's often true. Nobody is convincing me that lad is a £50m player. In fact nobody is convincing me he's a £40m player for that matter. You could pick him up for under £40m in the summer, no problem at all.

I would much prefer to sign nobody at all than to waste money like that

That Genoa lad is a good example of why the market isn't always what it seems on the face of it. Clearly Genoa have been open to letting him leave this window, but the lad's agent will have been taking his time to see who's interested and where the lad would prefer to go. Inter don't just appear from nowhere, the agent will have spoken to them ages ago and they'll have decided that Inter were the preferred option if a move materialised - so they hang on until late in the window and that's true of most players apart from the ones who have their heart set on a particular club or where the finances etc involved mean there's no real competition.

Frustrating, but it's largely what I expected this month.

What is a Moyes player

We're absolutely waiting until the Summer to sign somebody, and that's not being a pessimistic blue.

Without sounding like an FSG Trojan Horse, January is the hardest window to recruit properly. Clubs don’t want to sell, and the only players available are either overpriced, not good enough, or a panic buy.

Is it frustrating seeing other clubs do business? Yes of course. But the difference is, a lot of those clubs are operating from a completely different position financially and structurally. We can't afford to gamble, and lest us not forget there is some absolute dross we need to shift.

It's gonna take a while to sort this squad out, let's just be glad it's not Moshiri on the phone these days.

Mate villa just signed Wilson for 10m and Tammy for 18m they are bother better and cheaper than

McNeil 16m
Barry 27m

That were both bought in a summer window ….

Yeah as much as I would love us to suddenly unveil a new left back, right back and striker I’m also glad we don’t have mosh and co throwing cash at everything with a pulse.

That summer we needed a ten and signed Rooney, Sigurdsson, Klaasen and Vlasic all at once was exciting at the time until we realised we’d just signed four players who can’t play together because they’re all the same position and none of them have any pace.

We needed one position filled properly and instead filled it incorrectly four times to the tune of about 80m and breaking our wage structure.

Which Wilson have they signed for £10m?

I'm happy with Barry over Abraham - far more upside, far more opportunity to develop.
McNeil was signed 4 years ago; very tough to hold him up as a comparison to any transfer made in this window.

Bit early to say Abraham better than Barry tbf both at very different stages of their career. The higher price factors in later sell on value aswell as lower wages too.
Would I have liked Abraham for 18mil don't get me wrong but are we as attractive a club atm without Europe and recent relegation battles?
They didn't sign Wilson
