January Transfer Window 2026

I don’t massively rate what I’ve seen of this guy but there is no downside to Palace of a loan with option. And there would’ve been no downside to us either. Can understand us not getting heavily involved in inflated Jan fees but not much excuse to not use our loan slots when there’s deals like this out there.

Villa season ticket holder at work tells me Guessand is absolutely shocking so Palace are making some questionable signings

You could say that about anybody though, surely? 'I don't really rate him but bring him in anyway, what's the harm?' could be applied to all players, but it depends whether the people who actually matter see any point in it. If Moyes doesn't fancy him and wouldn't play him then obviously there is a downside, you're maybe paying out £5m that you don't need to be paying out for someone who just doesn't have any impact (Josh King or Anwar El-Ghazi style). In other years recently I'd agree that it was worth just rolling the dice because things have looked bad and you think anything that freshens it up is worthwhile. I just don't really see it that way this year though, if anything I think bringing someone in who might push Dibling and Aznou further down the pecking order is probably a pretty daft move.

As for the summer, With this being a World Cup year it has to be considered any player we want who performs well in it will potentially attract more clubs and possibly an even higher price than before the tournament started.

He's a striker; has been wasted playing as a winger for Villa.

That could a great move for him. He's a far better player than anyone has seen this season

Mateta to Forest for £40m
Palace had said they'd only agree if they had signed a replacement (Strand Larsen)

So they'll get £40m for a player with 18 months on his contract and have effectively paid net £5m for a much younger replacement.

Decent business.
Mateta's 28, Strand Larsen is 26 next week. Not sure that counts as 'much younger' to be fair.
