January Transfer Window 2026

Mateta is 29 in June, so the difference is more or less 3 years. That’s significant in a football career.
I mean it's obviously semantics to some extent but personally I wouldn't say it counts as 'much younger' to the level that I would factor it into the value of a transfer. If we announced in the summer that we'd decided not to spend £50m on Grealish but were going to spend £55m on a 28 year old instead because he was much younger, I'd say the logic didn't really make sense to me.

It's the net £5m spend that is the key factor here - there's an argument that they've achieved a significant upgrade here : certainly from a contractual perspective, arguably from a talent perspective

Tenuous links to Jhon Duran emerging.

Can’t see it personally, though he was hard work when he was Villa leading them being happy to let him go despite his blammo - no doubt the £64m fee having paid £16m for him jhelped too.

Doesn’t sound like a Davie Moist player.

Yes but now you’re comparing a 31 year old to a 28 year old. And still, personally I think that is a big enough age gap to justify spending more on the 28 year old if they’re a similar quality.

No I don't necessarily disagree, I just thought maybe you were under the impression that one of them was older or younger than they actually are, that's all. As I said, to me 26 to 28 isn't really a big difference age wise in terms of how much development you've got left in you, how quickly your levels are going to drop off etc so I wondered if maybe you thought the gap was bigger than that and so the value aspect becomes more significant.

I predict at least three will have started by Monday lunchtime. But which one will remain unlocked?!

I might get in early windy and box it off and post to myself until theres about 29 pages and it looks like it's been a busy thread, try avoiding any potential locking situation.

I'm off Monday so will get up bright and early and start wetting the sheets around 5am
