Jags vs Neville - how to be an Everton Captain

He was just about acceptable at right back, apart from those woeful, pointless lobs down the line.

In midfield though.... criminally bad.

That pass against Wigan though, being in the lower Gwladys that day was an experience, i'll tell you.

Fair play to Moyes for not playing him again after that one, although it was 2 years too late by that time.

Moyes only stopped playing him so he could go and get his badges to join him at United

Off the field. as an ambassador for the club Neville was a fantastic captain. I know tons of poeple who have had various dealings with the club and all comment how great he was

Then he should've been our ambassador ffs, not our captain.

Neville Southall should be our ambassador anyway.

Cahill captained many times when Neville was injured.
We hardly ever won any of those games.

Sauce? Or you just going from memory? Cahill captained us for a bit when Neville got injured during the 09/10 season. I think he did alright, wasn't it timed with our typical second-half of the season run of form?

Jesus wept! Can you imagine him in Bobby's team playing those lobs? What a nightmare.

Neville was ****e on the field and off it. He was like a robot programmed to say all the right things. He was an absolutely awful footballer.

This.

I despised the cart.

Thank God the Axis of Evil (Hibbert, Neville, Osman) days are behind us now.

Bit harsh. I didn't despise Neville, but I never rated him as captain, and only rated him as a squad player for his first 2 or 3 seasons. Lost any respect I had when he came out with that "massive achievement" comment. But despised is too strong still.

And Hibbert is a cult hero, and Osman might get a lot of stick but he's done well for us, and is still a very useful squad player.

Why the hell would anyone have a go at Hibbert?

Club loyalist and always worked his backside off when he played

His position in this clubs fine history is assured

This. Bit harsh on Nev, too. Looking back, Nev fit what the club was at the time, and we realize just how s***e it was compared to what we see today. Not much beauty in that game, but there were results. He's ManU's problem now.

They weren't saying this after that FA Cup win over United, were they? Someone needs to drag that thread back out.
Those were days I'd follow him through the wall. And ****ging Hibbo and Osman this way. Really, we're sounder than this, aren't we?

Haha, they were horrible days.

Back to Jags though, he's a fantastic player and captain. Probably slightly underrated among Evertonians, for me there aren't many better in the league.

Yes they were! As chuffed and high as I was seeing Neville smash that penalty home, I wasn't fooled. That was Utd's reserve team and I made no qualms at the time that we should get off our high horse in time for the final.

Highly-coveted by Wenger for a few years now. Props to Jags for not pushing the issue. Captain Jags has a nice superhero ring to it too b)

Nothing I can argue with here. If he keeps passing like the last two matches, I'm gonna swoon, I swear. My fanboy jersey is Phil's. As I said, he's the true heart of the squad.

He really is, hopefully he's still got plenty of time left in him performing at this level. Head and shoulders above that yard dog Cahill over at Chelsea. Irks me a lot when supposed experts put them on a par.
