Jags vs Neville - how to be an Everton Captain

Like most of you, I was incensed when I heard Phil Neville, our captain for so many years, say in front of millions that he thought it was "a massive achievement for a club like Everton to consistently finish top ten".

I'd love to know what Kevin Ratcliffe thought about that.

Now we've had a lot of talk about how the positivity of Martinez is helping us get results vs the dour pessimism of Moyes, but I haven't seen much discussion about how our players, and more importantly our current captain, are also doing it.

In the post-match interview (memorable because of Ross the Boss's camera-shyness), Jags is asked what Everton's aims are:

"We'd love to win the league!"

Yes, lad!

Ok, he tempers it with "but that's dreams", but then goes on to discuss a more realistic aim and names the Champions League places.

So we've gone from the Everton captain saying plucky little Everton are doing ever so well to finish top ten, to we wanna win the league but we might have to settle for top 4. And if the manager and the captain are talking like that, and we're proving it on the pitch, the confidence filters through to the other players, and to the fans...to the point where it becomes reality (we hope).

Very happy with Jags as our captain...high-end defender and excellent influence to the rest of the team.

Say what you want about Neville as a player, but he was an outstanding captain of Everton. It's just a shame he became a moyes clone.

Plus, he's been distributing the ball like a genuine footballer lately. If he can start doing that, well...

Life is filled with possibilities.

He's the heart of the club. Imagine if he can come up and play a bit of togger. Goodness.

I'm getting giddy.

Both are/were very good captains.

Say what you want about Neville as a player, but he was an outstanding captain of Everton.

Why do yous think he was very good or outstanding as captain? The Ronaldo tackle and pen vs Chelsea apart (granted, those are killer highlights).

I was never really convinced, even before his stupid statement. Felt he lacked proper authority (pointing doesn't count). Also, an Everton Captain should be one of the better players, a shoe-in for first-11. He wasn't that for about half his Everton career. Tim Cahill seemed more appropriate, but that's history now.

Plus, he's been distributing the ball like a genuine footballer lately.

Aye...even Distin, at 35, was saying how the pair of them are learning new techniques this season. Great sign that even older players can still improve (and a good sign that Mourinho's lost it, as he's on record after losing to Stoke saying that he can't improve older players...Everton to finish above Chelsea nailed on!).

Neville pretty much wrote the book on how not to be an Everton captain.

Those who "like" him fell for his self-serving, arse kissing antics hook, line and sinker.

I hope his like never stain the Goodison Park pitch in a home shirt ever again.
