Jags vs Neville - how to be an Everton Captain

Why does everything have to turn into some kind of historical purge around here where utterly everything that has gone before was wrong?

Neville was our captain for 9 years and played over 300 times for us.

The players he has worked with like Cahill, Arteta etc have universally praised him.

In his time at the club we went from a fanbase who regarded a top half finish as a genuine achievement (from where I am sitting I can see my "Magnificent 7th DVD" and "Season Review 95/96" VHS which contained our only other PL top half finish pre-he whose name must not be mentioned) to one who mocked 6th place finishes as worthless.

Neville did well for us. Lets hope Jagielka/Martinez lead us to success but I don't see the need to **** off someone who did well for us just because we have someone new in charge.

Don't be daft

Worst player in the football league?

The WHOLE football league

Madness
He was truly awful. Some 35-year-old has-been who could no longer run, tackle, pass or head the ball, leading out the blues with the fans dreaming of a charge at the top four in the league. A truly terrible player. If he was foreign he'd have been long booed out of the club.

I've mentioned this before on here, BUT...

The video package that came on before the semi-final with Liverpool in 2012. I don't remember if it was BBC, ITV or Sky.

Both captains appeared on screen and introduced their starting eleven from back to front. Gerrard was up first. Mean. Moody. Businesslike.

"Introducing Pepe Reina, Goalkeeper."

Gerrard reeled off the names of 10 other ********s including himself without cracking a smile. He looked and sounded like he was there for a fight.

Then it's Neville's turn.

He comes up on screen, with his stupid highlights and his weird skin and his stupid absolutely-bang-on wool accent.

"Sylvain Distin, he's just a great big teddy bear...Nikica Jelavic, he is literally the iceman."

The video package ended with a passing Phil Thompson ripping the dick out of Neville, while Neville shielded his eyes from the studio lights and shouted "Is that Thommo!?" over and over.

Any confidence I'd had drained away. He looked a clown, he made us look like clowns. If that's an Everton captain I'm Alberto Del Rio.

Please tell me someone else remembers this?

I remember it well mate, his use of words like try and hope stood out like a sore thumb, just summed up the difference in mind set between two teams of similar ability.

Neville gets far too much stick than he deserves IMO. Was a very good signing and captain AND had some very good moments in a blue shirt. I'll always respect a player who wants to move from the biggest club in England (who he supports) on big money, winning trophies because he doesn't want to sit on the bench collecting money and would rather go and try make a career for himself which he did here!

It's not his fault Moyes played him 12-18 months too long as a first team starter.

Jags is equally a boss captain too....Love jags!

Agreed- Neville gave us good service but should not have been playing regularly in his last season or two with us. Jags should have been given on field captaincy and Neville could have continued as club captain. That comment about top 10 finish was unfortunate and is used against him a lot but generally he acted properly and gave good service to the club.

He was an awful player with such limited ability. He was so bad the only highlights I remember are the tackle on Ronaldo, the stupid dive in the Derby and the Pen against Chelsea!

The fact that he was our Captain made it even more embarrassing, so glad he is not at our club anymore

I was at that match, was one of the best away trips I've been on. Brilliant day. I wasn't at the United semi but everyone said this was better, on the day at least. BUT...

Is everyone forgetting that this came a week after Neville courted Spurs in the press, after it came out that Redknapp was interested in signing him? I recall Neville getting some stick for it before and during the game.

I usually love players like Neville, he's obviously a nice fella and a good pro. But there's so much about him that was not befitting of an Everton captain. I was beyond sick of him by the time he finally went.

Off the pitch Neville was sound.

On it he was f*cking awful, and somebody with a complete lack of footballing ability should never be made captain.

That said, it's Barry who's stood up when the decisions haven't gone our way, good Vice-Captain material.

That pass against Wigan though, being in the lower Gwladys that day was an experience, i'll tell you.

Fair play to Moyes for not playing him again after that one, although it was 2 years too late by that time.

No didnt see this, but this makes me hate him even more.:@

Massive embarrassment to our club. He defined the "plucky, over-achieving, small club from Walton" mentality which held us back.
"I didnt know if I wanted to score that penalty" - against Man U in semi!!!!
"David Moyes would make a great manager of Man Utd" in 2011.

Phil Neville - worst captain of Everton FC in our history, and I include Mitch Ward who was captain for 25mins I think!
