Jags vs Neville - how to be an Everton Captain

I've mentioned this before on here, BUT...

The video package that came on before the semi-final with Liverpool in 2012. I don't remember if it was BBC, ITV or Sky.

Both captains appeared on screen and introduced their starting eleven from back to front. Gerrard was up first. Mean. Moody. Businesslike.

"Introducing Pepe Reina, Goalkeeper."

Gerrard reeled off the names of 10 other ********s including himself without cracking a smile. He looked and sounded like he was there for a fight.

Then it's Neville's turn.

He comes up on screen, with his stupid highlights and his weird skin and his stupid absolutely-bang-on wool accent.

"Sylvain Distin, he's just a great big teddy bear...Nikica Jelavic, he is literally the iceman."

The video package ended with a passing Phil Thompson ripping the dick out of Neville, while Neville shielded his eyes from the studio lights and shouted "Is that Thommo!?" over and over.

Any confidence I'd had drained away. He looked a clown, he made us look like clowns. If that's an Everton captain I'm Alberto Del Rio.

Please tell me someone else remembers this?

It's for these reasons why I like Phil Neville.

Jags would be exactly the same, whenever he's on camera he's always cracking a couple of jokes and having banter with team mates. Phil Neville was the ideal captain for the David Moyes era - top professional, full committed and always gave 100%.

Jags is perfect for Martinez - he's optimistic, plays with a smile but also doesn't take any sh*t. Love them both.

Neville should not have been captain or in the team three years ago. As for his top ten comments, I'd rather listen to his brothers views on Everton at the moment. Our problem when Neville was out of the team is nobody stepped forward. We now have three captains on the pitch in my opinion, Jags, Barry and McCarthy.

I remember when Landon started out strong for us and in an interview he immediately said "Well it helps when have a great capt like Phil Neville behind you." I think one of the reasons why Landon never did well was that he never felt welcome wherever he went. Phil also kept much of the media away from the other players. When we paid 5M for him my 1st thought was WHY? but he did good for us.

I hate the fact that Phil Neville captained Everton. He was nothing more than a prefect and belonged at a club like Blackburn or Hull.

One of the poorest footballers I've had the misfortune of watching on a regular basis.

For me he was too squeeky clean. He never said it how it was. Like Roy Keane (sometime he went too far). In terms of Neville it was always the correct answer. I got bored of him. He never gave a **** about us in the long run.

Neville was our captain for 9 years and played over 300 times for us.

In his time at the club we went from a fanbase who regarded a top half finish as a genuine achievement (from where I am sitting I can see my "Magnificent 7th DVD" and "Season Review 95/96" VHS which contained our only other PL top half finish pre-he whose name must not be mentioned) to one who mocked 6th place finishes as worthless.

Eh? So much wrong with this post, mate. I don't even need to correct it.

EDIT: ok, I just checked to make sure, he was captain for just over 6 years in total. He did indeed make 303 appearances alltogether for us.

The 6th place mocking was dealt with in the OP.

He looked a clown, he made us look like clowns.

Cahill should have been the Captain but he didn't kiss Moyes arse

Cahill would've been an amazing captain. Blood, Guts and Thunder! Can you imagine him riling up the lads for a derby semi-final?

He was a utility player who shouldn't have even been in our first 11 for his last 3 years at the club. The captain of Everton FC should always be one of our best players, and Jags is.

Neville was a good captain. I remember nearly every player we signed in their first interview would point out 'the skipper welcomed me in and made me feel at home'...doing the little things. He was a liability on the pitch most of the time...but he did the job of a skipper with class.

Definitely. Everton exudes a family type atmosphere where players really seem to enjoy being around one another. Neville seemingly had a big role in helping to foster that type of attitude throughout.

I think Neville was what we needed at the time - a proven winner, years of experience, very adaptable. No he wasn't the greatest player, but those saying he was cr@p are being very harsh on him. A lot of his work went unnoticed because it was all about positioning and reading the game - you don't notice when he gets it right, but you sure as hell notice when he gets it wrong. Getting into a position to prevent a killer pass being made in the first place is just as important as blocking the pass or a last ditch tackle after the pass was made.

As a captain, players could look up to him because of his trophy haul and loads of England caps.

He did stay on for a couple of years too long though

Off the field. as an ambassador for the club Neville was a fantastic captain. I know tons of poeple who have had various dealings with the club and all comment how great he was
