Current Affairs Israel is an apartheid state

I very rarely have agreed with Michael D over the years, but I agree with him here.

To call our Taoiseach anti-Semitic is, in my opinion, deeply offensive and wholly unjustified. Coming from thr Foreign Minister of another State it is incredible.

I am not a Simon Harris fan either, but his refusal to engage and sink to the same depths of insult is admirable.
Israel closing their embassy in Dublin and calling us an extreme State and people is music to my ears. It just shows them for the deluded gaslighters they are. Genocide is extreme

Hope she gets to visit BR, she certainly deserves to .
DV Netanyahu is put away somewhere along with the other hawks in this regime, and some more reasonable representatives of the Jewish nation can lead their people to peace. It needs equal reciprocation from the Palestinians, but above all it needs courage.

Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by Jihad for his peace efforts with Israel, and Rabin in 1995 by a Zionist extremist for his efforts.

Thank God, it didn't happen to the leaders in the six counties - both sides were sticking their necks out with extremists gunning for them.

Well it is a hostile act from a supposedly neutral country all the same.

As posted deep in the vaults of this thread, I was very much in the minority as a strong supporter of Israel in my late teens. The rest of my school mates - those that were interested in Middle East politics - were firmly pro Arafat and PLO, wearing the scarf etc.

After this, I could no longer defend Sharon, the IDF and the Israeli Government's actions.

I did NOT become a PLO supporter either, but simply want to see peace in that historic land.

I never thought I would see peace in the Wee Six of our own country during the 70s, 80s and early ,90s, but incredibly it came, and sworn enemies went into Government together.

If I was told in 1994 after the Shankill Road bombing , Greysteel, and Loughinisland that Paisley and McGuinness would share power, and be known as the 'chuckle brothers' I would have thought the person telling me was cracked.

I pray for peace everywhere in the world. Sadly, humans have serious defects but it needs bravery, not at the point of a gun, but with an open handshake to reach through the mist of hatred, and try to create a peaceful future for all.

I will never give up hoping - I want to visit the Holy Land in a peaceful time to see the historic sites of all religions there.

It may not happen - we had a deposit paid on a trip in 2018 but Mrs BR was then diagnosed with cancer and we had to cancel DG she got through and is well- but I will always live in hope.
We are on completely different sides of the fence here in regards to this issue, but on the health front i wish your wife all the best in her efforts to overcome that horrible disease.

Thanks Corky, so far so good, no recurrence since her surgery and treatment.

I don't think we are completely on opposite sides - I just believe Israel's reaction has been disproportionate in targeting civilians. Some have suggested that the civilians are happy to act as 'human shields' - how does the IDF member firing the missile or dropping the bomb know who is going to be blown to pieces?

I have never condoned Hamas in its actions or its aggressive language towards Israel.

Still, remember Paisley:

(On Catholics) “They breed like rabbits and multiply like vermin.”(1969)
'NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!' at Belfast City Hall in 1984;
'Catholic homes caught fire because they were loaded with petrol bombs;'
Don't come crying to me if your homes are attacked. You will reap what you sow (1986);
I will never sit down with Gerry Adams . . . he'd sit with anyone. He'd sit down with the devil. In fact, Adams does sit down with the devil;
Come Friday, the world will see what the Protestant people really think of this so-called peace process, which is really a surrender process;

I will walk on no grave of Ulster's honoured dead to do a deal with the IRA or the British government. (1987)

but.......

I believe that Northern Ireland has come to a time of peace, a time when hate will no longer rule.

Who knows what the future may hold, but please let the killing cease.

doesnt answer my question tho,
Do you think the Irish government is anti Semitic?
To make it clearer.
Do you think the Irish government hates Jews?
I see you're just going to skip this.
My point is that Netanyahu is hiding behind the term 'anti Semitism'.
This devalues the meaning of the word.
I doubt Harris or Higgins are taking the stance they are because they hate Jews.
I think Higgins is right to be furious at the accusation.

I'm sorry, but that isn't true. At the time Jews needed refuge from Europe, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Muhammed Amin al-Husseini, was virulent opposed to mass Jewish immigration to Palestine because he had the foresight to see where it would lead.

Additionally, there has never been a Palestinian State ruled by Palestinians. That's not an argument that they should not have one now, by the way.

The PLO were happy to allow right of return for Jewish people up to the 1970s in a secular Palestinian state. That was their position.

I honestly don't think lots of progressives went on a similar journey mate. For a variety of reasons.

Well, the 1968 PLO charter called for a Palestinian state giving equal rights to Christians, Muslims and Jews, but that state would replace Israel, and would deny Jews the right to self-determination, which is the entire point of Israel to most Israelis. I'm not sure that they would've allowed uncontrolled Jewish immigration, but I'm quite happy to be proved wrong on that point.
