Current Affairs Israel is an apartheid state

In other news, the Israelis have withdrawn their ambassadors “for consultations” from Ireland and Spain on their announcement of recognition of the Palestinian state, and threatened Spain with the same action if they also recognise it.

A typical overreaction (given that most of the rest of the world also recognises that state) which will hopefully, like so many other actions that regime has taken, backfire and cause more of the EU / NATO to do the same.

Most of the West has the long stated position that two states are the only way to deal with this ongoing horror. The reason there aren’t two states is because the Israeli regime actively sabotages and has sabotaged this process. The decision needs to be taken out of their incompetent and blood-soaked hands.
How dare the Irish and Spanish recognise that Palestinians in Palestine should have their state recognised.

This is a good question to always ask.I think you are wrong however but realising we have the option between terrible and awful might make us understand when a better opportunity outside of the current situation arises or even force a better option to arise.
There should be a splintering of the Democratic Party and a new party formed with socialists and greens and other like-minded progressives in the US.

The same should occur in this country too at the expense of the former Labour Party.

All that is solid melts into air...

They've been recalled and Israel aren't happy.

Couldn't be prouder today.
That's what I mean, they should've said "f your recalling them, they aren't welcome anyway".

Would love to see that evil, genocidal maniac Hotovely yeeted out of the UK.

Nah mate.

The spirit behind this is peace and a two state solution - thus recognising Palestine as a state as opposed to a region to be obliterated.

You want diplomatic relations with both Israel and Palestine, there prob isn't a county in the world with more experience of a marginalised, war torn, disputed region and how to implement a bilateral peace process then Ireland. The UK too now that i think of it.

UK should follow suit.

Sorry for repeating myself but it’s worth again pointing out that even the Board of Deputies opposed her posting here, on the grounds of her loonery.

TBF there’s no comparison - either in the politics or the treatment of the populace. As bad as Catholics were treated even under the worst days after the Republic was founded, it was never as bad as what the Palestinians have experienced.

Netanyahu should be told is either a two state solution (on the 1967 borders) or a one state with everyone having equal rights; there should be no more tolerance for a supremacist state.

There's no way the UK government will go for recognising Palestine.

I do hope it festers and becomes another thorn in the side of the red Tories though.

Not to argue a macabre point because atrocities are just bad without comparing them, but 1 million people died in Ireland during the great famine in 6 years. Before you look at any armed conflict.

The Israeli government have announced they’ll be re-settling three settlements in the West Bank that were withdrawn in 2005.

I don’t think this is going to have the impact on Western opinion that they think it will.

To be fair, they don't teach that in English schools.

And that's the nub of the Ireland-England story. One side never forgets, and the other side never remembers.

They did, but the point was about the conflict in the north (and the experience of difficult negotiations).
