One can excuse a lot, if "better than Pol Pot" is the benchmark. The titleholder for "worst world leader of all time," "worst world leader right now" and "greatest player of all time" are all unworthy of serious debate, and best left to the bars and pubs in which they belong as drinking pastimes.

But there's a difference between a policy of wiping out a whole population or at the very least purging them from their own territory on ethno-religious grounds and a superpower flexing their muscles to gain a geo-political advantage and secure interests in a part of the globe.

Because an ideological foe simply won't back away until the opponent is destroyed; a non-idealogical opponent is looking to maximise control and then seeks a way out via negotiation.

Well, not quite. Russia have used the spectre of stamping out 'nazism' in Ukraine as a pretext for territorial encroachment and a land grab there.

There was a nazi element to Ukraine's military but it was a flag of convenience for them to state that it was a strain that dominated the Ukrainian body politic.

But again, if you are belonging to that populate would you really care about the ideological viewpoint of the person kidnapping your children/raping your wife/killing your family?

If the answer's yes then you really need to gain a sense of perspective.

Thinking Ukrainian party politics trumps an invasion from a nuclear superpower is either politically biased or spectacular misjudgement either accidental or intentional for the purpose of being contrary.
