Almost all do that last anyway. Even Lincoln stuck his own son on Grant's staff. Eisenhower's son John was kept away from combat during WWII out of concerns he might be targeted for capture. The US Park Service (which gives the 'short form' histories of the various presidents) reports Ike told John during the Korean War that under no circumstances could he permit himself to be captured while serving in combat. The only other president in modern times who let his own kids go in harm's way while commander-in-chief was FDR.There is no rift with his parents, and his whole existence in Miami is a giant f-you to his father's political opponents.
Nothing says that a leader doesn't fear the consequences of his actions than protecting his son whilst putting hundreds of thousands of other people's sons at risk.
Presidents' children serving in combat was much more common prior to the Civil War, when combat service was a primary pathway to a political career. If a politician's kid wanted their name in the paper for the right reasons, that was one way. The media loved to drag a prominent politician's kid through the muck then as now if given the opportunity, of course. Supposedly Grant himself was arrested while president for carriage speeding in D.C., and paid what amounted to the fine.
