Isolated Players (Front Page Article)

Its interesting some of the players not told to stay away, Lookman, Besic and Sandro.

The two former players looks strong for moves away, but maybe something has been seen in Sandro.

Maybe his attitude or he's following the instructions Silva is giving him. I like him, reckon there's a player in there.

Reckon Besic is off back to Boro and Lookman prob off to Leipzig but maybe he is happy to work with those 2 if they dont move.

This is a good move by Silva:

It reduces the size of the playing/training squad to manageable levels (albeit artificially at this point)
It's a clear message to those 4 players that they are 100% not part of his plans for the season (actions speak louder than words etc.)
It's both a warning and a boost to those who survived the cull: Congrats I want you as part of the squad but I have no issues wielding the axe

Not being funny mate but I feel like you're not actually reading what i'm saying.

Yes it works both ways - that's the whole point! The entirety of the point being made here is that some people are only seeing it from one angle when there is actually another viewpoint. I can't stress enough that i'm not saying it won't work, only that it is absolutely not a risk free strategy. This is absolutely the type of thing that you could see us talking about in 2 years saying 'well I suppose we should have realised this would happen when he banished those 4 from training before the season had even started...'. Hopefully it will prove to be a masterstroke, all i'm trying to do is get people to see that there's a chance it might not be.

I am reading what you're saying like, and of course it has risks but I doubt it'll be a problem as football is all business these days and there isn't room for sentiment,( which is what I think the first team squad will understand ) me personally I don't agree with kicking people away from the squad, I think it's very embarrassing for the player

however I dislike them all bar vlasic so I'm not that bothered on this occasion I suppose

I see Lanolin's point, but I don't think it is a risk. That does depend though on how this has been done/handled, which none of us are privy to. But as Silva seems to be very much a players' manager then I imagine it would be a 'sorry but you're not in my plans for the first team, and I need to concentrate on those who are and limit the number of players I'm coaching in one group'. Don't see why anyone would have any problem eith that.

Possibly, the hard conversations didn’t have the desired effect and this is the next level up.

I don’t think as an elite sportsman you’re too affected by things like this, sadly it’s a very cut throat business. I remember reading something from an NFL player a few years ago that during practice squads a guy he’d known for years, been mates with etc and his overall feeling was relief because it wasn’t him that now had to find an alternative and it meant his position was more secure. Holgate might get on with Williams, but at the end of the day he’s competing with him to keep paying his mortgage.

Agreed, no issue at all if that's the case, and it may act as an incentive if that's the thinking.

Improves mentality and creates positive boundaries in my opinion, there is no right to be in the first team squad or near it. And all players are now aware they will be excused from the first team if expected standards are not met. And If one or two of the current inglorious excused pull their socks up I would like to think there is a way back if individual negatives are improved upon!

American sports are way more cut-throat. Guys just get just get traded practically any time, with no input, sometimes right before a game. Our guys have it a lot easier than their American counterparts.
