Is Martinez our best signing this year?

I remember when Mike Walker was appointed as Everton Manager, the excitement and hopes were high. Everyone was a fan of how Norwich played football under the management of Mike Walker, we all talked about how they beat the mighty Bayern Munich and what Mike could do with a big club like Everton. And, I remember someone on the telly saying " We are a sleeping giant, Walker will awaken us "

I want to stop at that point, because everything after that was fcuking awful. We were all wrong, on a grand scale.

He turned 40 last week, so he's over the hill now :)

I like the comments from Wenger; hadn't seen those before. Yes, it's very early days but I'm pleased with him and I'd been saying since we didn't sign anyone in the January window that I thought Moyes would be off at the end of the season and Martinez was the man I wanted to replace him. Obviously the Wigan relegation didn't help his reputation, but they were only relegated by three points so only one win away from the likes of Southampton and Sunderland who stayed up and are busy strengthening their squads with the sort of cash he would never get at Wigan.

He kept Wigan up for 2/3 years despite their playing budget being slashed following the Steve Bruce era, won the FA Cup, but before that, the work he did at Swansea marked him out for me as a good young manager with a progressive and refreshing approach to the game. He's clearly a student of the game and lives and breathes it, and Swansea have reaped the benefits of the ground work he did there, backed by a supportive board, and I hope our board back him too.

This. I think given a little patience he could be a very good manager for us. The main issue for me is I feel that for the next 3 years we're probably going to look to finish top 10 rather than top 5 till his philosophy permeates the club, and I don't think the majority of our supporters will stomach that.

4th is too hard and even Moyes couldn't do it for us, so that leaves us with 5th for Europe which is hard as Spurs and Liverpool will fight for this position, I would take finishing 12th and winning a cup then finishing 6th without a cup.

Things could change for the better and the new style under Martinez could see us break into the top four with more retention of the ball and effective counter-attacking with pace in Kone, Mirallas and Deulofeu, or it could fall flat and disaster. Under Moyes we were making steady progress and I believe we were close with him in charge and would of pushed hard again this season albeit some of his tactics frustrated. At this moment I am slightly leaning towards wishing Moyes was still in charge, at the same time I believe Martinez is capable of taking us to the next level but frightened of Mike Walker shenanigans rearing their ugly heads again.

Agreed. Will Martinez see sense when he see,s his system is,nt working and embrace a step backwards to go forwards?

I have said this before in another thread nothing wrong with introducing total football but you need to have the players who have natural skill to make that happen.

Moyes played safe did,nt take any risks, did,nt push his players beyond that which he felt was beyond them.

Interesting times ahead.

I'm talking now, he hadn't been able to do it over the last 3 years where we have been our strongest, plus he didn't really get us into the CL mate, we nearly did.

Well time will tell, we haven't really made any signings of note, so it's not much comparison. I am impressed with him so far. However, he will, like anyone else, be judged on results, not on what Arsene Wenger says, or how many passes we complete (I have yet to see the Kopites trophy for having the most passes haha).
We finished 6th last season, with an excellent squad. He has already been given unparalled investment compared to previous managers. His job is not to play better football, but is to improve on last season, and finish in the top 4. If we drop out of the top 8, he will (rightly) be sacked.
He does talk a good game though.

Before Everton, from what I recall, Mike Walker's credentials seemed to be based mostly on an over-hyped on a good run in the UEFA Cup with Norwich, before Inter Milan put a stop to them. Chris Sutton in the side if I recall, and some older players having Indian Summers.

Take you point, but Roberto has more substance and depth. He did something special turning things around with Swansealona, and repeatedly impressive in his seasons managing Wigan, with many top sides learning his Wigan could play. Also forced to sell on some of his best players, season after season.

Martinez, who was fined £8,000 for criticising refereeing decisions at Old Trafford last month, said: 'I thought he (Kone) was level. It was a close call.

They couldn't defend though!

He turned Norwich from relegation contenders to a 3rd place finish, at the time we thought he was the man. We were wrong, very wrong.

Roberto has the potential to be great, but he could also be another Walker.
